Default Property tax exemption for the disabled

Does anybody know how this works? I looked it up on the website and it looks like you could be exempt from real estate and school taxes as long as your house is valued under $125K. Is this true?

I think they allow you up to $32K off the value of your home, then calculate your taxes. Is there also a homestead tax reduction?

According to a website I just looked at, it says none.
In reference to your Homestead question.

Default Taxes/disability

Beckycat,

Hi and welcome...I have been on disability since 2000, am single, and have done some basic checking..I have found that my disability retirement from another state will transfer to DE and will not be taxed. Social Security Disability is not taxed. There is a clause regarding property taxes, and I know Charley will check me on this, (at least I hope so) but it says that retirees who reach 65 have their property taxes reduced/eliminated?. I'm double checking how that clause applies to disabled residents. I'm searching all of my city-data sites for details on it...will post it here when I find it unless Charley beats me to it ;-)

I have found that for me, a good solution is an over 55 community with land-lease. That allows me to use my a available capital initially on getting into the home, and since I don't need the tax deduction on any possible property taxes, I can have more available to live on...especially, since I guess you know, I live with about a 3% cola per year, and no additional income.
I also am looking at the over 55 specifically to get the snow/yard/etc. issue dealt with, though I am open to know if those services are provided by other communities than the over 55's. ANYONE?

Hope to hear from you again,
Jan

armx will become famous soon enougharmx will become famous soon enough
For the amount of money the 55+ communities charge for those services it would be possible to contract with somebody who provides those services and save somre more money ...advantage of the 55+ comunities is supposedly that the residents would have similar interests and disinterests -e.g. shenanigans by teenagers -day in day out - in summertime
