Hi there,
we are thinking about moving from MN to the East Coast. Seems like DE has everything we are looking for: milder climate yet still has a winter, close to entertainment and beaches, a few hours from the major cities. We are looking for a condo/townhouse around $200k in DE (the bigger the town is the better). Is there anything available in that price range on the East Coast? We don't have to be close to good schools (kids are grown and gone) but proximity to the shops/restaurants/entertainment is very improtant to us. We have never been in that area (planning to visit within next few weeks though) so any advise would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance...

Kent and Sussex have a lot of condos/townhouses in that price range......even near Rehoboth and Lewes. I don't know about northern Delaware in New Castle County.

Thank you, kat196 for the reply. What are the towns and neighborhoods that are not safe to live? My husband is an ex cop and very paranoid about safety.

Delaware, by and large, is safe. As any cop knows there will always be pockets of bad areas that require extra police attention. Three counties - New Castle, Kent and Sussex - make up this tiny state.. Population less than 1mill.... New Castle - northern-most county is the most urbanized, also closest to good transportation - Amtrak, I-95, closest to Philadelphia, New York.

Currently, there are townhouses available in 200 K range, in New Castle County also. Prior to your visit if you need any information you will get plenty of help here on this Forum.

I live in a 104 house townhome community in NCCo. - we are adjacent to a police troop, a county park, a YMCA, a elementary school and a soon to be little league complex - the house on the other end of my 5 house row just sold for $199k - originally bought 1 owner removed for around $140k in 2002. THe people that are in it now broke even from their purchase about 2-3 yrs ago.

Very quiet and safe (with the police troop, it tends to be quiet since no one wants to draw that activity to them).

Any knowledgeable Realtor would be able to tell you what neighborhoods to stay away from. In Kent County, I am sure that any town home community you choose would be safe. Even in New Castle County, I am sure that there may be a few you want to avoid by as a PO state, Delaware is a pretty safe state.
House prices are still low in Kent County and there are some nice single family homes under 200K here if you are interested in a single family home too.
Happy Hunting!
