Hi I have lived in Delaware all of my life and recently moved to Charlotte. I would suggest Bethany Beach, DE as a good place to relocate in Sussex County. I wouldn't suggest Ocean City or anywhere in Maryland...Good luck!

That is where my brother lives with his wife. It is kind of the same as living in Fenwick Island. You need to be prepared for alot of tourism and summer traffic and activity there. If you like the slow, quiet life, it may be for you. Personally we have driven there to visit him while on shopping trips to the outlet shops in Rehoboth and find it miserably boring, backward, farmish and way too remote, but if that is your thing and you like what is referred to in Delaware as "LOWER SLOWER" you might find it your cup of tea.

I'd have to agree to a extent. Selbyville is an iddy biddy town that really has nothing to offer in itself. Property taxes state wide are cheap. Auto insurance is expensive. Twice what I was paying in NH. You should get a quote from your agent. You might be surprised, especially if you have a point or two. The cost of living and the cost or real estate is high compared to average wages. Retirees from DC are driving the prices up. Selbyville is very rural with lots of farm land. Traffic around Selbyville isn't bad. Typical small town. Get close to the beach in the summer though, and you be wishing yourself back to raleigh. It took me an hour twenty minutes to get to Dewey Beach by car today. It takes 20 minutes tops in light traffic....and 10 minutes by jetski or boat.

I live on the water in Millsboro with a dock in the back yard which is the only reason I stay here. As nice as it is being on the water, I think Raleigh is better. I lived in Clayton, just outside of raleigh for 10 years back in the 80's. Of all the places I've lived, that's the only place I've always wanted to go back to.

I'm kind of torn. I don't want to sell my house here, but it's awfully hard to make a living here. I may look around Wilmington or Wrightsville Beach next year. I really need to be near the water.

Ross

Sassychick,

We made our move from NC in Sept... ended up in Kent County, DE and so far we love it. As far as Selbyville, as the original poster asked about... haven't had a chance to venture that far south in DE yet. Hopefully, with the weather breaking for spring, we will get a chance to check out more of Sussex County.

Mary

I couldnt agree more. That statement pretty much sums up the entire Delmarva Peninsula. Its ok to visit, thats it. Everyone always talks about the beauty in and around the area, I dont see it. If you are anywhere near a chicken farm you will NEVER want to venture outside due to the nearly yr round smell. There arent many jobs and the area as a whole has quite a bit of crime per capita. Taxes are cheap in DE, but also remember that housing(new real estate anyway) isnt cheap considering that most jobs in slower lower are blue collar and low paying. For some its great, if you dont mind being bored most of the year.
