i'm looking at moving to Delaware from PA. i live in an area about an hour NW of philadelphia. my son and girlfriend and i want to live in a fairly nice area of delaware. our son is a year old, so we want a fairly safe, quiet area. we'd prefer if there were some young families like us. any ideas, thoughts, suggestions?

Worst of both worlds, That's a killer commute, you still pay Philly Wage Tax and Pa and Delaware income taxes (they offset). Where will you be working?

I'm astounded, how would anyone commit themselves to driving 100 miles a day, or more to work. This kind of attitude keeps us dependent on foriegn oil, no matter what kind of car you drive. I have been stuck doing it, but only when my job was transferred. All over the country, millions and millions of people sitting in traffic burning gas and then wondering why the economy is collapsing

I agree, but with the economy the way it is, you do what you can to keep the checks coming in. I commute 45 minutes each way. Public transit is not an option for me.

Are there safe areas to live in Northwest Philly that are cost effective and so that you don't have a long commute each day back and forth to work.

My DH is going to be working in PA and we're planning on moving to Middletown. His drive is going to be about 51 miles each way. It's the best option for us that will allow him to follow the career path he'd like to while allowing us to maintain our current lifestyle (type/size of house, good school district, SAHM). It's not ideal, but it's what will work best for us. It won't be too bad, however, b/c my DH will continue to travel 2ish nights a week for work and probably telecommute one day a week, so on average he will only be doing the commute 2 days a week.

If it's enough money, the commute isn't a problem. I live in North Philly, and I grew up in Wilmington. I sell insurance, and drive much more than that daily, but I've grown a tolerance to the point where I don't care about driving anymore.
