Working in North Philly and Living In Delaware?
I'm trying to save some money and live in a safe place. Is it worth to commute into North Philly for work and live in Delaware? How long is the drive? Am I better off living and working in Philly? What would you suggest for a single, professional female on a budget and moving to the area? I need your help. Thank you!

My husband works in North Philly and we live in the Kirkwood area of Bear. It is about 100 miles round trip, and on a good day takes him about one hour and 20-30 minutes. However, on a nice Friday, it can take more than 2 hours. We used to live Delco: Prospect Park, Ridley Park, and Rutledge. All are affordable areas for young professional singles, with easy access to center city on the rail lines for night life. When we lived in Delco, it would take him about 25-30 minutes unless there were traffic tie-ups. PM me if you need more info.

I have quite a few friends that live in Delaware (Wilmington, Bear, Middletown, even as far as Smyrna) they commute every single day into Philly. Some of them complain, some don't. They work in Philly because of the money, but they live in DE because it's very affordable. Bottom line, you have to figure out if you're willing to commute, anywhere from an 1-2 hours, depending upon where you would live.

Some of the areas you pass through on your way to North Philly are probably worse than where you work. Darby, Chester, Eastwick ect are pits!

I agree with Loose Cannon. However, there are very nice residential areas between Darby and Chester. If you think you want to go into Philly for the night life, there are towns on the train line. I grew up in this area and would easily move back to Prospect Park, Ridley Park, Swarthmore, Rutledge, and even the outskirts of Media.

If you want to move to Delaware, Claymont is a good location. It is on the Septa line - so you have choice of a drive or commuter train going to Philly. Although my son who used to work in Moorestown (NJ) prefered to live in Ridley Park to avoid interference of 476 traffic on I-95 but that is becasuse he was not used to thinking in terms convenience offered by "commuter train" - but again, you are already a Philly person you are, probably, more enlightened on that front.

PA is garbage, stay in Delaware. The only drawback would be the horrendous commute on 95 with all the idiot drivers, high speed chases, etc.

Claymont or somewhere in "North Wilmington" close to I-95 would seem a good choice. The commute should be quite a bit easier than from Bear! I do have some friends who commute daily to Philly from central Wilmington and it reportedly takes them about 45 mins to their destination, leaving home at 7.30 a.m.

Just a reminder - look at the DATE of the opening post before deciding to reply. This thread was started in May of 2007. If you click on the posters name you'll open a window that lets you see all the posts from that poster. The opening poster from this thread was last on citi-data for in May of 2007. Of course, some threads are always interesting and no big deal to re-open but if you don't want to waste your time replying to someone that will not read your post, look at the date first....
