I've never lived anywhere, including Texas, where I have routinely got into conversations with other patrons sitting at the bar, whether at a restaurant-bar or a tavern, nor have I met so many people this way as here in Delaware. There are a lot of people my partner and I know here simply because they took the initiative to strike up a conversation when we were sitting at the bar in a restaurant or in one of the local taverns (our habit is to eat at the bar - we seldom go in for a drink only). Other places in my experience - Texas, Colorado, New York, England - people may exchange brief pleasantries, but you don't typically actually get to know people socially this way (I'm not talking of "singles bars" and the like, of course).

You know you are in Delaware when you encounter the cult of the black license tag and the low tag number.

BTW, if Smyrna isn't pronounced "Smear-na", how is it pronounced? Is it "Smur-na" (as in Smurf)? I never notice particularly notice how people say it (not that I hear it alluded to all that often in northern New Castle Co.).

Well I dont' know whats the big deal being a true Delawarean or a transplant.
Who really cares. It's now like DE is the hottest state in the union.

I think we all have fond feeling from where are roots began. Mine began in PA and I still have a special place in my heart for PA.

right now IMHO........DE is a melting pot of transplants from all over the country. I think it is wonder these people from all walks of life can get together and live in a state in harmony.
I've encountered many different accents. Some real southern, some real Jersey and so on.

don't get me wrong. DH and I are very happy with our choice to retire to DE and intend to finish out our lives here.
Transplants keep coming and I for one welcome them with open arms. why not?

You've got it, doctorjef. As everywhere else, there are some strange pronunciations. You have Houston, TX, we have House-ton, DE.

Oh, while I was out and about this morning there were so many happy people doing their thing this beautiful spring day. I guess Delaware can't claim rights to having the "happiest" people, can we? as in...
You know you're from Delaware when everybody seems so happy and stress free.

I'm "guilty" of this. I live in a subdivision, but my address is Middletown. Where am I supposed to say I live, if not my where my address is? I don't understand. What relevance does my subdivision name have to somebody from, say, Wilmington, or Lewes?

It makes no difference to the vast majority of us. There are always those who look to make you feel less knowledgeable than you are. I wouldn't give it much thought.

I'm not from DE but I've been to all three counties and really like the state:

When you have a fight about what football teams to support: Eagles or Redskins/Ravens?
Ocean City is considered a tourist trap for Marylanders and Washingtonians.
Once you get on the DMB (Delaware Memorial Bridge), you're home.
You get Maryland and Philadelphia channels on the same cable system.
You know the cut-throughs to avoid the tolls on I-95.
Baseball teams: Phillies or Orioles?
You think of the Eastern Shore as the South.

I was initially surprised to see how many Cowboys fans are out here too... People always look at me funny when I have my Chargers hat on.

funny.......In Philly everyone was an Eagles or Phillies fan. If you were anything else.......Don't want to announce it especially if you were a cowboys fan. OHHHHH taboo.

Here in kent county its really kind of nice to see so many different teams being supported.
