I don't see squirrels or squirrel nests in the trees in New Castle County. Are there not squirrels in this area?

they are around but they don't generally come out in the open as much - you need to venture into the wooded areas to see them a little more

I suspect it is all the hawks circling around that keeps them out of the open areas...those hawks are vicious to rabbits and squirels!

There are loads of squirrels all over the place where I live in northern New Castle County. They're in my yard, everyone else's yard, playing chicken with cars in the streets, and when the trees are leafless in winter one can see their big nests up in the tree branches. I am in a quite wooded area, which may well explain it, though it is still thoroughly suburban.

You might need new glasses, OP. Squirrels are everywhere.

I have a wooded area in my back yard. I did see one squirrel climing in the tree over the weekend. That's it so far. There are big hawks that circle constantly overhead all of the time, so I wonder if they stay hidden. I don't see the squirrel nests in the trees like at previous places I have lived. I love squirrels but am afraid they are in hiding for their lives from the hawks.

Default squirles in New Castle County, DE

In June of 2010 we had a dozzen living between our house and 5 other properties adjoining our lot. Then we went away for a 6 month vacation. Returned in mid December. Usually by March we start seeing them again, but have only seen one, once so far, since we returned. Did something decrease their population while we were away? [Last May we also has a hawk visiting us, probablly living in nearby Delcastle Park, clutching one of our squirles]

Hawks circle around my development (right across from Glasgow County Park) - I haven't seen a squirrel or rabbit in a while - I'm sure they are in the woods but aren't coming out in the open in the light
