They can visit as in most communities but only for a certain amount of days per year and I do think that number is 30. I love kids but having worked in the teaching profession for nearly 30 years I want to have adult conversatations on a regular basis. ( Hmmm, of course I have met a few adults in my lifetime who seem to be stuck at a school-age level as far as maturity goes!!! ) Thanks to your post previously we are going to look at Spring Meadows the next time we head down that way.

Have a good day.

Thanks Joyce. You too.

We liked Spring Meadows but thought the homes were a little on the small side.

Default Coming to Delaware soon for a visit

I plan to come to Delaware in April to look it over as a possible retirement area. Since I am a couple of years away from actually moving I will look at some 55+ communities, but probably not make any firm plans, since new ones seem to be opened up periodically. This is just sort of a vacation and deciding if I want to make it my permanent home. I have read quite a bit about the area the past few months and so far I like what I see. I enjoy reading the posts here and they help out a lot. Thanks to all who share their knowledge here.

Hi Eileen,

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad that you've been able to learn from many of our posts ... and hope that as you visit the various communities you will share your thoughts about what you see with us. Some of us (like me) are visiting Delaware, making our own observations, but still learning from everyone else's experiences as well.

Thanks
Charley

nevada49- actually we are going down to Del this weekend for our third visit. We will take another look at some communities and revisit one, Independence, a 55 plus community, we have seen before. It is about 30 min outside Rehoboth. I am curious. What did you find you liked about Delaware?

I think that Charley does his homework quite well in finding his ideal community.......and I find that very refreshing. You want to certainly love where you move to and not be disappointed.
The main rule that bothers me is the child rules.........
I see now on a Florida thread that there is one couple selling their 55+ home because their 4 year old grandchild is now living with them.
Most of the communities allow 30 days, and I think this poster mentioned that, that was their circumstances also.
You just never know in life,if there will be some sort of happening, that would require you, the grandparent to open your home to a grandchild or two.
Emergencies happen, difficult times happen......amongst other things.
The thought that one would have to sell, as this Florida couple is having to do, is disturbing to me.
Isn't is funny, that most of the places allow a dog or two........or more even.
But.......there seems to be no bendable rule about children.
I have come across quite a few "all age" communities that seem to be the majority of owners over 55........
Personally, I am more comfortable with that. If I bought in one of these,( all age) my kids could come in and out as they wish......Their children could stay with us, as often as they'd like. Friends and family could come and go.......no counting days.
I'd hate the 30 days to be up, when I'd like some more little fellows to join me at the beach.........
I like the young, bright eyed, exploring souls around me.......
I like to head off to the alligator farm with them, or the aquarium.....the state parks.
I have visited the 55 adult parks. Some are really nice.
But really........I'd miss all the young adventurers in my life.......

Thanks so much. That's very sweet. Let's hope that when the time comes, I've made the right decision. If not ... I'll just have to MAKE it right!

I agree. Charley has researched this, more than thoroughly

An over 55 community is not for everyone, nor is living smack dab in the middle of a town, nor is living WAY out in a rural area. Different strokes, I always say. With me, I live in a small town. I see the grade school children, and high school teenagers walking past my house to school. Listening to their chatter makes me smile. I see the senior citizens walking past my house to the bus stop.....some walking slowly, some walking briskly, some walking their dog, some pushing their grandchild in a stroller. I see, and join, the senior ladies on beach bikes, making a quick trip to the market down the street. In the summer, we wear our straw hats with ribbons in the wind, and honk our little air horns at one another! During harvest, I see the Hispanics, of all ages, walking past my house who pick apples and peaches at Fifers Orchards. They are always smiling and nodding their heads at me. I love planting myself on my front porch and watching the show go by! With me, variety is the spice of life!

Just did a check of Barlclay Farms in Camden and plan a visit in May. Location looks good as we'd be so much closer to our kids and beautiful grandkids.

Thank you all for the help and info.

Default Leaning toward Delaware for retirement

Deeker1 and others: What I like about Delaware so far is the scenery, natural beauty, beaches nearby, and it just looks as if it is a pleasant place to live. I had been planning on retiring in the desert southwest, but realized I don't really care for desert scenery, plus I am worried about water availability in years to come. Delaware also looks well situated for travel: near DC, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, etc. And the tax rates are hard to beat. Hope I like it as much after I go there as I do now, or I am back to square one.
