It's all that gunk that gets underneath the crown before it pops-off.

I had a crown come off and man, the stink and poopy taste in my mouth lasted for about a week. I bought a firm toothbrush and scrubbed that area, every day, for about 5 days and it really helped with the odor and rotten taste.
