whatever happened to laser dentistry? (tooth, pain, repair, surgery)

Many years ago, the coming technology was going to be painless laser dentistry.

No more needles for novacane, no more hearing the drill that created pain despite novacane.

8-10+ years later, it appears not to be offered.

What happened to it?

In 2009, I had eye surgery using laser.
It repaired a torn retina.
If a laser can do that without causing blindness or other after affects, why can't lasers tackle an area of a tooth that has decayed?
