I got a root canal 2 days ago. There is still some pain.

What worries me is: right after the RC, there was a general pain (soreness) no matter how I ate or touched that tooth. This always happens with RC. But now, when I bite on that tooth with the opposite tooth, there is a sharp, short pain. The general soreness is gone.

Also, when I bite on the tooth, I have to hit it at a very specific angle for it to hurt. I thought that normally, the only pain after a RC is a general soreness and not a sharp pain. Would you expect that kind of pain after an RC??

It is an upper molar. The cold sensitivity, which I had before, is now completely gone, which means the nerves are gone. I've been taking Amoxicillin and Ibuprofen as he suggested, and I have no idea what effect they are having.

PS I'm supposed to go back in 2 weeks to get a permanent filling over the hole made for the RC. If there's still pain I will ask him. Is it possible that there's an infection in the tissue near the tooth, causing pain?

It's possible. It's also possible that this is normal. Didn't your endodontist give you some idea of what to expect, or tell you to call if x, y, and z happen? I'd just call their office and ask if this kind of feeling is normal. Maybe you need to go back into their office before 2 weeks.

If I still have the pain in 2 weeks I'm going to ask the dentist to file down the tooth. It already sticks out more than the adjacent teeth. Do you think this will be a problem?

The tooth has four "bumps" on it, and he might have to file only one of those bumps.

After having 30 root canals, I should ask
1. was the root canal performed in one visit?
2. regardless of your answer assuming your dentist?or endodontist? performed the root canal appropriately and disinfected it well, then most likely the pain you are describing is detailing the ligaments which hold your tooth in place. It is very common at least in my experience to be sore for several months especially being that it is your molar which gets a lot of use.
3. in addition are you experiencing any hot sensitivity? I have had infected root canals and I will tell you that the pain increases DRAMATICALLY within hours...you will know if it gets infected. Heat sensitivity can be due to an infection or inflammation. The only thing I would consider is the possibility of a crack near the root of the tooth, but that is remotely rare as well if this is the first root canal on the tooth, it really depends on how the tooth was before the procedure.

In summary, I would not worry about the tooth at this stage. Should you experience any increase in the amount of pain I would go to the endodontist and make sure they create a little hole for you in that tooth so if there is an infection it can drain.

Best of luck...

My pain ended after about 8 days after the root canal.
I took ibuprofen and amoxicillin throughout. I have no idea if they had any effect.

Call the dentist's office and ask.

How much ibuprofen are you taking? It is not unusual after a root canal for it to hurt when you bite on the opposing teeth. You can take up to 800 mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day. It sounds like you are having an immune reaction (inflammation) after the root canal. It should subside in a couple days.

Call your dentist with any questions.

I think you have infection on your mouth, and this infection attacking on your tooth. So you should go to dental specialist and discuss about it.
