Careington Dental Discount Plans...anyone heard about this? (tooth, pain, dentist)

I don't have dental insurance and I have bad pain in my lower right jaw from a tooth. I went to a dentist and paid for just an exam and xray and they said I need a root canal and crown on a bicuspid. They quoted me $2400....I can't afford that.
My girlfriend found companies like Humana Dental and Careington Dental Plans and said I should join one of those membership groups and get a discount. On the phone, someone with the Careington plan said I would pay less than $1000 for the same root canal and crown work if I joined, it's a $75 annual membership fee, 1 year contract.
My mom thinks this is a scam. I feel like I'm out of options. I need this work done but I can't pay $2400. A payment plan through the dentist would be $200 a month and that's tough as well.
Does anyone else use Careington or another discount group? I'm in pain and need work done fast, and I'm worried I'll do something that is a scam if I don't get some opinions. Thanks.

No it's not a scam. Some dental offices do take those discount plans.
Not a scam. We use a dental discount plan. Call your dental office to find out what dental discount plans they accept. Not all plans are accepted at all places. My dentist only accepts a couple.
For us it's cheaper than the dental insurance at DH's work.
