When my husband retired last year our dental coverage ended. We now self pay, our dentist is wonderful he discounts our services, we pay $75 for a cleaning and he gives us great discounts on other services. He told us that since we both take good care of our teeth that we can go a year between cleanings which is a big help. We moved so he's now 2 hours away from us but I wouldn't change dentists for the world. After calculating premiums, deductibles and co-pays I don't think we will be spending much more annually than we were with insurance

Yes, they can't pull teeth if you have an active infection because it can cause the infection to spread throughout your body. They can give you novocaine for painful deep cleanings. Keep whatever teeth you can, full dentures are not fun, my mother had them and was in constant agony. I don't know why they didn't give you antibiotics - go to a different dentist.

This is an old wives tale created by dentists who do not want to cram you into their busy schedule, so they make up a reason to have you come back another day. When you perpetuate these myths you are not helping anyone. When you have an infected appendix do they tell you to come back to the hospital after a couple of days of antibiotics? Of course not, they rush you off to the operating room right then.

I question f you are really a dentist. I work with top oral surgeons on cases everyday and they always want to contain the infection as best as possible prior to extraction.

Do people think these businesses are looking for ways to just give away their services for half price for no reason?
I expect a licensed health care professional to treat me in a professional manner and not like customer on a used-car lot. Even if he/she uses a Groupon to get people in the door.

I have relatives in the Dental industry and the stories I could tell...

Lets just say

They kill lions in their spare time, for fun.

SOMEONE pays for that. You, the patient.

If you take good care of your teeth, brush and floss daily, a yearly dentist visit is a necessary evil but you'll be putting them out of business.

Oh and make sure your Vitamin D is ok because this is what cost me 6 teeth in 6 months despite having good habits and near perfect teeth all my life.

The Problem With Infection ; it is incredibly PAINFUL.

If you have a "hot nerve" (which basically means, the tooth is dying) no amount of novocaine will kill the pain.

I have been crying in dentists chairs with agony but sent home with antibiotics twice because the infection was so bad the pain relief wouldn't take.

One memorable moment she poured 5 injections into me before I refused the sixth, pointing out that technically the first two had already worn off.

I went home still in pain, still with tooth, script in hand, to come back in a week when the infection had settled and the novocaine would take.

Twice.
