I'm having 5 anterior crowns replaced, the old crowns were removed and the teeth prepped last week. Next week I go back for permanent crowns. One of the teeth had a root canal and is very dark, in fact the temporary crown doesn't cover the entire teeth and the top of the tooth shows and looks black. The dentist tried to bleach it but it didn't work. So will the darkness show through the crown? I can't think of any reason he would try to bleach it if it wasn't a concern. Having this work done is expensive and I want it done right, I don't want to be stuck with a tooth that doesn't match the others.

And what happens if my gums recede, I will have a black line above the crown right? What do dentists normally do in a case like that? My appt. is next Tuesday morning and if there's something I should ask him about regarding this, I would like to do it Monday and now when I'm in the chair drooling and incapable of talking from the local

How did they bleach it? The dentist (or maybe the endodontist) can open it up, remove the gutta percha from the visible portion of the tooth, and bleach it internally. Is that what they did? External whitening could help, too, but I’m assuming the darkness is coming from the inside of the tooth. That darkness shouldn’t show through the crown, I don’t think, but it will show at the gumline if there’s a space.

He tried to whiten it externally but said it didn't work. I think the tooth is dark because that happens sometimes after a root canal is performed. I asked the same question on reddit/dentistry and was advised to go outside with a mirror before he permanently cements them to make sure they all look the same so I guess that's what I will do.

Yeah, the darkness after a root canal can be mitigated somewhat by internal bleaching. Good plan to check them!

Just wanted to follow up. I went in for the permanent crowns and they look great. He bleached the endo treated tooth again and promised me that it would match the other teeth. He took me outside to look at them, it matches and they're beautiful. He said that while prepping one of the teeth the gums slightly receded and he wants thinks they will be fine in a few weeks but for the time being he put the crowns in with temporary cement, when I go back in a few weeks if the gums aren't better he is going to remake the crowns- I guess all 5 to make sure they match. He's a perfectionist and I'm very impressed by his work and his attention to detail

Oh yeah this is weird but the temporary cement smelled exactly like road tar yuck
