I don't know how reliable this is or if the author is on a rant.
I skimmed that article. Al Bartlett is a known ZPG type who himself had 4 kids, but "that was different". He wants a Boulder like the Boulder he moved to in the 1950s, when it had ~20,000 people.

No one (that I know of) predicted the drop in the birth rates in Europe and Japan, until they started happening. Birth rates everywhere are dropping, even in developing countries.

"Bartlett wants a Boulder like the Boulder he moved to in the 1950s, when it had ~20,000 people."

Sounds like the poster who wants a Colorado like the one he grew up in during the 1950's, and wishes everyone else would leave. Change "colorado" to the name of just about any city, state, or region and we're all on board - coast to coast. People in hell want ice water, too.

I agree in general principal, that growth for the sake of growth (and growth of profits) is not good for the populace. But since when has what's good for the nation as a whole been a holy grail in the halls of power when lobbyists for oil, auto, and development come-a-calling with bags of money....

Birth control that works and high cost of living assure that most people will self-regulate family size. Virtually EVERY nation on earth now has a birth rate that is below replacement levels. As explained by Ben Wattenberg in Fewer, the population will grow for another 40 years, as the babies yet to be had by women of child bearing age are added to the existing base; but by 2050 he expects population to start a worldwide decline owing to lower birth rates. Major ecological or other causes might cause a decline sooner.

So, all that being said, Denver is not some new mammoth L.A., and most likely never will grow into being a new L.A., unless tens of thousands of good JOBS migrate here from elsewhere, or Denver becomes a retirement mecca.

Denver will only be "The New L.A." only after the big quake hits and CA falls into the ocean.
