I am thinking of going to UC Denver and I see that the campus is downtown. I was wanting a neighborhood where I can rent a house. I was hoping for an area that is not too preppy (i.e. expensive and snobby) or too party-ish (don't want kids puking on my lawn). But, I do want to be close to amenities (no far-flung suburbs or boring neighborhoods) and be no more than 20 minutes away from the campus. I also want it to be safe. Does anybody have any ideas on some chill and nice little spots?

Looking for a 3 bedroom house that I will share with two roommates. Was thinking 1,000-1,800 per month.

That's a big spread in rent. $1000 will not get you a three bedroom.

Ok. 1,500-1,800 then. Honestly, price is not much of a factor. I care more about finding the right fit and I will worry about price later.

CU-Denver is not really a residential college. It is primarily a school for commuters. You would not really have to worry about the college kids puking all over the lawn, as most of the students do not live downtown, but commute to the downtown campus. Since light rail serves the campus (and is free to students) you could live in many different areas and enjoy an easy commute. If I were you I would concentrate on the areas along the light rail lines. The area that has most of what you want would probably be the area around the University of Denver.

True that, but a lot of them seem to rent apartments, rather than live at home with the 'rents. They are more scattered, I agree. The area around DU can get party-ish. My daughter lived in that area in a very nice apt, and there were times when there were a few partiers right in her little complex.

Does anybody have any specific neighborhoods to suggest though? Here are my desires in order of preference:

1. Has a neighborhood feel and stuff to look at and do (bars, stores, people walking around, etc..). I do not want to live in the cookie-cutter suburbs out in the middle of nowhere.
2. Safe.
3. Not uber-preppy.

Try University. If money is no object, Wash Park.

I would look at Baker and maybe West Washington Park. South Broadway is full of restaurants, bars, and interesting shops. It's not preppy or cookie cutter. It's close to downtown and UCD. It's on the 0 bus line which is very convenient as well as the light rail (Alameda and Santa Fe) which can take you directly to the UCD campus. It's a mix of young people ,old people rich and poor.

Attached is an old thread and if you scroll down a few posts you will find a photo tour of the area from a few years ago:
