Both Breakfast King and Swift's Breakfast house closing
Quote:
Could Denver be losing Swift's Breakfast House, too?

For the second time this week, news about the potential loss of a longtime Denver diner is firing up social media. First came the January 3 shuttering of Breakfast King and now the fate of Swift's Breakfast House at 930 Santa Fe Drive is up in the air.

Open since 1960, Swift's has been known for its great greasy-spoon ambience. . .

Less than a week into 2022, it's not looking like a very good year for Denver's diner scene — which already lost Tom's Diner, the Denver Diner and the 20th Street Cafe after the March 2020 shutdown and has yet to see other traditional 24/7 eateries return to their full hours. . .

I'm sure COVID played a part in this. I never patronized these places much in the past. Breakfast King was a place I'd go late nights after the bars. I don't recall the food being anything special. Never went to Swifts. There are a few diners remaining on Colfax and Broadway if I recall. Pete's Kitchen and Sam's No. 5 come to mind. I think more and more places are catering to the brunch crowds. Sam's No. 5 in Aurora, for instance, is strictly opened for breakfast and brunch. They haven't been open for dinner or late night in a couple years now.

I remember well when they opened up around July of 1975. There was no grand opening, no fluff, no advertising at all. Didn't need to Back then, Gates Rubber was running three shifts. As they were right across the street, it was rare to not see that place with at least a third of the place full. Went in there an awful lot from the 70's-80's till I moved to Mesa County. Sad to see them shut down.
