Yes, it is a fact but as long as you stay away from shelters and hiring a cheap motel room (meaning: any hotel room on Colfax), you should have no problems with bed bugs.

Bed bugs affect luxury hotels and upscale apartments every bit as much as dives and slums (maybe even more - they're often spread by traveling businessmen).

Yes, they are a real problem and not limited to "roach motels". I know people who have been affected. I myself had a scare when a child who stayed with me later turned out to be living in an infested home. I set my mind at ease by hiring a bed bug sniffing dog service. The dog handler's phone was ringing non-stop. If you do any research on them you will find out how easily and insidiously they are spread and it has nothing to do with affluence or cleanliness. I will no longer go to thrift stores, yard sales or buy any used clothing or furniture. Apartment buildings and high-density living situations are especially susceptible. There is a website you can check addresses for reported incidences of bed bugs: Bed Bug Registry - Check Apartments and Hotels Across North America

This shouldn't scare you away from our beautiful city but a little awareness goes a long way.

Bed bugs are not an issue with cleanliness. A crappy hourly rate motel is no different than a luxury 5 star hotel in regards to the transmission of bed bugs. They hop on luggage and clothing and feed on blood. They don't feed on trash, they don't feed on stained sheets, they don't feed on dust, etc.

Set your luggage on the luggage rack(not on the bed), strip the bed down and check for blood spots, check behind the headboard, behind the nightstand, in the nooks and crannies of the bedspread, bed skirt, under the mattress, etc. Not 100%, but it will give you a real good idea.
