Hey there,

So I'm a travel nurse originally from south louisiana and I just got an assignment in Grand Junction from mid November to mid February. Being from Louisiana, I haven't experienced a "real winter". I'm looking forward to the snow and skiing!

My main question is how is I70 between Grand Junction and Denver. I Have no experience really in driving on snow and ice. I drive a ford explored with pretty new tires but I dont plan on getting any kind of winter tires as I'll only be in Colorado for 3 months. I do have some friends and family that want to visit in December and January. My question is how realistic is it for me to be able to drive from Grand Junction to Denver during these months to pick them up from the airport?? ( assuming there isn't a random blizzard going on!)

On any given day in the winter that road can be closed, for an hour or two or half a day. It was closed yesterday morning for a brief time and it was snowing up there today, some places getting a foot of snow up in the high country.

You'll need to be well acquainted with the CDOT website and highway cams. Up there right now it's snow packed and icy.

Thanks for your reply! I have bookmarked the CDOT website! So as long as the interstate is not closed, I should be ok to drive to Denver???

If you have choice, try not to drive during bad weather snow storms as - still - when you leave the road may be open but by the time you get deeper into the mountains it may be closed. If you never driven in snow, practice before starting the big trip.

Remember that most often the issue would be not with going in the snow, it is stopping - especially when there are turns. Make sure your breaks are good.

Looks at a weather forecast ahead of time and if it looks clear that would be a good time to do the drive.

I don't know where they are flying from, but I know that both United Airlines and American Airlines fly into Grand Junction. It might be worth it for you to investigate that because a roundtrip road trip from Grand Junction to Denver takes about 10 hours in good weather.
