February 2, 2011

Total accumulation from the Jan 31 storm: 2 inches
YTD Snowfall: 20 inches
YTD Snowcover days: 26
YTD Snowcover in the shade days: 43
YTD Ice Plume days: 35

We had some light snow showers/flurries tonight, mostly north of I-25/Broadway up to and including downtown. No real accumulation on top of what's been sitting there.

It's -14F as I type, with a -27F wind chill. I don't think we'll get down to the forecasted low of -20F. This cold sucks, I'm ready for it to be nice and warm again, like say 20F.

My 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid struggled to start this morning.

-15ºF at Monaco & Leetsdale in Denver. My dogs hate it, even though they're Siberian Huskies!

LOL.

Sixth sub-zero reading of the year, BTW.

Stupidest thing ever: Denver Public Schools are OPEN. My kids aren't going.

Running in that cold of wx has got to be painful. I've ran here in -4F temps and I thought my face was frozen when i got home.

Not sure why I called it a plume (I guess it sounded right at the time? ), but,

During the winter, a large, thick sheet of ice forms on the road in front of my apartment (from compacted snow, frozen runoff, etc). It doesn't melt when the rest of the road snow/ice does, and sticks around due to the road being shaded by the apartment building (and I suppose, a lax HOA).

In order for me to reach the steps that lead to my door, I must traverse over this ice. Last winter, one of my next door neighbors broke her foot after slipping on it. Last year, it seemed as though the darn thing never melted.

This year, I've decided to keep track of this ice's livelihood, and thus far it has survived for 35 consecutive days (this year's version was born on Dec 30, 2010).

I'll post a picture of it as soon as the snow on top of it melts. It's ugly.

Okay, I was afraid that I might have been missing out on a
major weather statistic all these years. Can't wait to see it. . .

Boulder set a record today.

No. It doesn't happen EVERY year. Negatives do, but not THAT low. David, we have a plume as well, by our mailbox. This hump of ice that never seems to melt, but it did the Friday it got to 68. Did anyone else get more than the "½ and inch" that was predicted?
