Default Driving CA to Denver

Just wondering if anyone has done the Bay area - Denver drive? Trying to look into routes and a mid-way stop.

Any ideas would be welcomed!

Thanks

I've done that drive, in the opposite direction, from Denver to San Francisco. The route is pretty straight forward-- you would take I-80 all the way through Reno, Salt Lake City, Wyoming, and then at Laramie, WY, get off on US-287 to take the shortcut to Fort Collins, then I-25 south to Denver. You would want to stay a night in Salt Lake City for sure. That's about 5/8 the way to Denver. SF to Salt Lake in one day can be done, if you take turns driving, but it would be more comfortable if you spent a night in Reno or the Lake Tahoe area-- not to mention that is is totally beautiful and a lot to do there anyway. Other than the stretches through the Sierra Nevadas and the Wasatch range/ Park City area, expect a LONG boring drive. The only other towns of interest on the route I can think of is Elko, NV-- home of the casino with the (in)famous bear.

Also look at Winnemucca or Battlemountain as possible first night stops.

We recently drove Fresno to Denver and took 2.5 days. We took 99 to 15 to 70. Stayed in Mesquite, NV and Grand Junction.

I will disagree where to turn south toward Denver from I-80. Route 287 is a slow, dangerous road. Get behind a slow car or truck and you're doomed. You can even get stuck behind a train in Fort Collins. Keep going to I-25 in Cheyenne before going south. The road is much safer and about the same time.

It's better to spend overnight in Wendover, NV, but SLC has more lodging options.

Watch out, the 120 mile stretch from Rawlins, WY to near Laramie, WY is very desolate with no stores, no services and no cellular. Stop in Rawlins...you'll thank me.

Definitely take I-80 from SF and then hit I-25 south. SLC is a very logical stopping point as it is ~halfway there.
