Default Wife and I will be moving to Denver for her schooling....HELP!

Today it was finally confirmed that we will be moving to Denver so my wife can attend the accelerated nursing program at UC Denver at the medical campus in Aurora.

I will be looking for a full-time career in law enforcement or some other area that provides medical insurance.

We have tried doing some preliminary searches for places to live but have found it very difficult due to the fact that we have a German Shepherd. (who is an angel, but every owner says that lol)

Does anyone have suggestions on where to find housing that allows "aggressive" dogs? Right now as long as it is in a solid neighborhood and is close to the medical campus we are game. House, townhouse, apartment anything really.

We will be moving in the middle of May and we are hoping to make a trip from Oregon to Denver at the beginning of April.

Thanks for all your help!

Try using our search tool with keywords like Aurora, nursing, etc. We also have a number of such threads listed in the index of key threads, under Medical. IIRC, there is another thread currently working on the same topic.

I did search the threads...no help on finding housing around the medical center with an "aggressive" dog...aka the restricted breed list.

Each property owner will be different when it comes to dogs and big or aggressive dogs. If I were you, I'd go to Denver craigslist rentals:

denver apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist

check the "dogs" box, enter your price range, and the start going through the results line by line.

You could also post an add in the housing wanted section describing exactly what you're looking for: a 2/3 bedroom house/apt within ____ miles of CU campus that will allow a German Shepherd. Maybe you'll get lucky and your next landlord will find you.

denver all housing wanted classifieds - craigslist

I think you'll be pretty hard pressed to find an apartment complex that will allow a German Shepard (plus isn't it a bit cruel not to give your GS a yard?), so I'd focus on houses. I would imagine there are plenty of affordable house rentals in Aurora that would be within a reasonable distance of the campus. 80010, 80011, 80012, 80013, 80014, and 80017 are the Aurora zip codes I would start looking at. I'd also consider the Denver neighborhoods of Green Valley Ranch, Montbello, East Colfax, and perhaps Stapleton and Lowry if you can afford them.

I just did a quick craigslist search of dog friendly properties where I typed "80010" as my search term and came up with these:

Great Location - Move in Today! (http://denver.craigslist.org/apa/2247627040.html - broken link)
Great 3 Bedroom Brick Home With Easy Access to Fitzsimons Medical Cen (http://denver.craigslist.org/apa/2244986623.html - broken link)
2 bed, 1 bath ranch home with hardwoods & washer & dryer (http://denver.craigslist.org/apa/2242697564.html - broken link)
Convenient & charming 2 bedroom ranch home with fenced yard & carport! (http://denver.craigslist.org/apa/2238796868.html - broken link)
Home For Rent (http://denver.craigslist.org/apa/2236597904.html - broken link)

And this was just one zip code and I only bothered looking at the first few returned results. Do it for all those zip codes and the Denver neighborhoods I listed, and I'll bet you come up with a list of 50 places that could work for you.

Hi Just,
Welcome (in advance) to Denver/Aurora. I'm new to this forum but not new to the area...
There are, shall we say, some "dicey" neighborhoods around the Fitz campus. I know a student from the campus who ended up renting near Hampden and Chambers in an effort to find a "safe" neighborhood. Bottom line: Research carefully.
As for LE jobs: difficult but doable. There are 25 or so police and sheriff agencies in the metro area. Many are not hiring because of budget issues. Denver, for instance, the biggest department in the state, won't be hiring at all in 2011 and 2012 is iffy. I suggest looking outside the box: GEO is a big company that runs the local INS facility in Aurora. I think they also run a private prison in Hudson (northeast of the city) that's increasing its population. (Do a search for "Hudson correction facility" if you're interested.) Jail work ain't the greatest, but they seem to pay well and it's job security.
Best of luck!
Ger

OP, price range for rent would help, but I'd look hard at zips 80012, 80013, 80017, 80014, and maybe 80015 if I were you.

Hi. I work on the Anschutz Medical Campus at Children's. The areas directly surrounding the campus you'll want to categorically avoid. The closest, nicest option is, by far, Stapleton but you've not mentioned a price range. Check here aside from Craigslist:

Stapleton, Denver, CO Real Estate, Apartments & Houses for Rent - HotPads

You can include "dog" in your search. As far as your GS, it'll depend on the landlord and how well you can vouch for his/her angelical nature. Everyone is more focused on pit bulls here; they are banned in Denver .

Thank you so much for all of your guys' input. I have been researching via Craigslist, ForRent.com and websites similar to these. The only problem with these websites (it is really more of an issue with the apartment websites) but even if they say they are dog friendly with no weight limit (which is a stupid qualifier because some small dogs are just as destructive as large ones) they have a restricted breed list. Which GS are always on.

Hammertime, I appreciate your concern for my GS and my cruelty towards him, but as I run miles a day (with him by my side) he loves nothing more then being on his bed and sleeping the day away. A good run in the morning and a good walk to the dog park, where he runs till he needs me to carry him home practically is plenty for him. I can barely keep him at a good weight he gets so much excerise. But again...thank you for your concern.

SenseiGerry- thank you for the heads up on the LE jobs. 25 departments beats the 10 at the most I have here in my area now. I did have a signed job offer and everything lined up for Oregon State POlice but they cut me due to budgets as well. I will research the LE community there. Thank you very much!
