Default ended up turning down a $55k job offer

Well at first I accepted it, and even worked part time for two weeks at night while waiting on my 2 weeks notice (which I never gave).

This job was always fishy, too many uncertainties.

1. At first I was told it would be an IT support job for 16 weeks so I gracefully turned it down. The next day the mgr called back and said they had changed the job to 'permanent'

2. They interviewed me, made an offer and when I asked about their benefits handbook I was told they were 'transitioning' so I had to wait

3. During the interview I was told that they were experience tremendous growth, hiring an approximate 70 people in the last month or so. Then I found out that these same people were also offered 16 weeks worth of work just like I had

4. Then I found out that the guy wanted me to work the night shift, not 'to be available to work at night when needed' as disclosed in the interview. The morning guy that would keep the day shift said that I could also work the day shift except that we would take turns covering the night on an oncall basis remoting from home... on top of our 8 hr day...

6. With the admin IT rights I found out that my job was still classified as a 'contractor'.

5. This was the last drop in the bucket. This other tech guy was a slob, The nights I worked there I cleaned up their entire data center and workshop and he still got pssed at me for mixing up the cords and crap he had laying around all over the floor. Then he wanted me to do some grunt work that he had not done for months.

I left the mgr a note and my badge and keys, then the next day the guy called me and asked my reasoning for leaving. He caught me off guard as I was busy so I only explained to him the most recent incident about my work ethics being like day and night between me and this guy. I invited him to tour my current work place where I am the sole IT support at a 5 story building and check how clean and organized I work and maintain the physical and systems. He asked me if I would reconsider if he was to let go of this guy and I said yes... I don't know what may happen now and I dont think I care but it just amazes me the deceitfulness that most companies are doing nowadays to entice good employees. I knew the job was too good to be true considering it was being offered as a straight direct permanent hire"... any thoughts welcome!

Would you reconsider at $65K? With additional vacation? With more clearly spelled out benefits? If so, you have tremendous negotiating power. Ask for something to reconcile your original bad feelings about the position if they come back to you. And of course, get their offer in writing before saying yes, and ask them to revise/rewrite as needed.

You are in a rare spot - they apparently want you badly enough to ask you to come back. Use that leverage.

I think you did the right thing. Fortunately you didn't quit your current job, so nothing lost. If I were you I'd continue looking to find something better out there-- good luck!

So wait, you're willing to let this other guy lose his job for you, when you don't even know if you want the job? Wow...

Welcome to the new world of corporate IT. We will use you, abuse you, pay you the least wages possible and fire you any time we have a budget shortfall. Just wait till 2012, you think it's bad now!!! Thank God for the recession, now the huge corporations can finally get back to old school employee abuse!!!

We need to change the Statue of Liberty...."Give us your tired of spirit, your weak of will, your starving masses and we will put them to work for next to nothing!"
