My favorite is Denver, even though the OP said to exclude Denver. I like the variety of neighborhoods it offers and I like how many of them have their own business districts or at least clusters of businesses. If you want an urban environment, look at Capitol Hill. If you want something that feels suburban, yet is still close to downtown, look at Virginia Village or Indian Creek. It really does have a lot to offer, so I'm not sure why the OP wanted us to exclude it.

IMO the most interesting communities are the older suburbs (1950s - 60s) many of which have brick ranch homes and many mature trees. These areas are also much closer to Denver than some of the newer areas mentioned by other posters. For example, the eastern areas of Lakewood, Wheat Ridge and Arvada. The older areas of Aurora, adjacent to the east side of Denver, are not particularly safe north of Alameda. If you want new buildings, these are not the right areas for you.

Old Littleton. Used to live there and I still love hanging out down there. I love Western Welcome week and the fair. Fun for all. Melting Pot is nearby and some smaller bars and restaurants and right across Santa Fe is my favorite hang out, The Platte River Bar and Grill.
