Angry Colorado Cops - Police Brutality

Why is police brutality or crimes being commited by the police, making headlines so much these days here in Colorado? I see lots of threads about how great Denver is to live in, but people need to be aware of our dark side too. And I know crimes committed by the police is not unique to only Colorado. But this is OUR state. It's embarrasing and I would love to go a full month without hearing about a cop committing a crime. Heck, at this rate, give me a whole day!

When I was growing up, we were taught that the police could be trusted with our lives. They are there to help and protect us when we can't protect ourselves. I know they are just human, but they are held to a higher standard than most because we rely on them so much to do the right thing. I always thought of them as super heros without the capes. People who rely on them the most to be that super hero are showing up in headlines as victims of the police. The elderly, the women and children, and in some cases even animals.

Here's just a small example of police related incidents that made recent headlines:

They beat people within an inch of their lives http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27760608/detail.html On this link, there are at least 16 other links to related stories of recent police brutality.

They file false reports/caught lying http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27516955/detail.html Police brutality on women and then lying about it. They were fired for lying, not the brutality caught on tape.

They kill people and get away with it http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27827427/detail.html Their actions caused this man to die. This was also caught on tape.

They beat up kids http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27854169/detail.html The same officer keeps getting in trouble for punching kids in the face while they are already handcuffed and sitting in his cruiser.

Involved with child porn http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27862082/detail.html He was not only caught with child porn, he also has access to children in the community.

Drove drunk while on duty http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27840007/detail.html This guy was fired, but he's trying to get his job back.

Illegal street racing with kids http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27890776/detail.html WTH?

They kill family pets for no reason at all http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27863147/detail.html I'm so mad about this one, I'm beyond words for it.

Thoughts anyone? Do you have your own stories about running into a bad CO cop?

Denver has one of the highest police brutality rates of most major cities.
Its sad...But I heard that won't be doing any hiring..so they will keep those bad cops on the force.
Do you know how many times I was stopped because of my race..One cop didn't believe me when I told him all I spoke was english. He stopped me for not having my headlights on..it was 9am??
Almost everyone I know has or known someone who has experienced police brutality..Now thats high..

I went to school with a guy who is now a Denver cop. He was the most straight laced honest guy in HS. He must be one of the only good guys there,

I saw my friend abused by a Littleton cop. Granted she needed to be stopped because she had been drinking, but they threw her on the ground face first and she bleed a lot and put their knee on her back and handcuffed her. She probably weighed 100 pounds at the time. Seemed a bit much for such a little girl.

Then I was stopped by a Greenwood Village cop between a subdivison and orchard/quincy road, I was on my way to work in the DTC.

He said I ran every every stop sign in the neighbourhood and I ignored his siren. He took my purse and tossed al the contents all over the sidewalk then opened up a prescription pill bottle and I had a couple pills in it so he took me in until they could confirm all pills I had in the bottle were prescribed. I explained to him I put all my pills in one bottle because it's easier. I had some for monthly cramps, some were for IBS, some were water pills and some were regular store brand asprin I was in a jail cell for 6 hours until they identified every pill and confirmed I had a RX for each one.

Maybe he did chase me, I don't know, it was 7:30am and I keep my music pretty loud in my car and I can't hear much outside and I never look behind me. But he didn't need to put me in jail for 6 hours.

I was stopped several times, one for driving on 48mph at 50 mph road while it was raining day.
one for no reason, he just wanted to check my ID, one was because I turned right without checking and stopping in the neighbourhood while no stop sign there. He warnned me that I was lucky to bring my ID and passport with me or I was sent to the jail until Monday( It happened on Friday). They just like to use their power!

I always make sure I have a fresh supply of donuts in my car just in case I need to bribe a cop.

Seven cops spent $700. Police strip club party. You just know that each cop had a budget of $100, and they stayed there until they had spent every dollar of it. They probably had all the evidence they needed to shut the place down within five minuets.

I've had contact with:

Denver Police
Aurora Police
Littleton Police
Boulder County Sheriff
Greenwood Village Police
Arapahoe County Sheriff
Douglas County Sheriff
CSP in Frisco

Most were civil, some were even friendly. My Littleton Police experience wasn't too pleasant, and the Boulder County Sheriff guy I dealt with seemed too big for his britches.

All of my Aurora Police experiences have been quite pleasant.

I had to correct Arapahoe Sheriff on a speed limit zone once (lol). I deal with them and the other Arapahoe Rd over-protectors (Greenwood Village Police) at least a few times a year.

I never been arrested; never been charged with a crime; never been in jail; have not had a traffic ticket in 16 years. Have some contact with police departments over need for help, city and neighborhood issues--never really had problems. Most are friendly, some are nervous/cautious, some are perhaps a little arrogant but the same could be said for shopkeepers, priests, and teachers; but I never suffered from hostility or brutality or have seen any occur.

I am not naive and I realize that these situation happen; but I do not think that Denver and Suburban Police Forces are much different or worse than other large metropolitan areas. It is hard world with tough bad people; sometimes makes the proper, best actions and decisions difficult.
