Hi!

Cherokee Trails is the newest High School out here. It is absolutly beautiful! There are 2 kids on my street that go there, they love it-but I don't know much else about it. greatschools.net rates it an 8 (out of 10).

The other High School nearby would by Grandview or Eaglecrest. Out of those 2, Grandview would be my next choice (it is also rated 8). I am not too fond of Eaglecrest-but that one wouldn't be yours if you were in Tallyns-The High School for Tallyns Reach would be Cherokee Trails.

The new Middle School (Fox Ridge) opens up this next school year. And I hear it will share all the sports fields with the High School, which is kind of neat. My son starts middle school next year, and he will be going there.

Tallyns Reach is BEAUTIFUL! I love all the trees as well. I also like South Shore (By the Aurora Res.) Although there isn't a whole lot of trees there, but you have the water so close, and all the walking trails around the res.

If you have any more questions, fire away. I am just the other side of E-470 off Smoky Hill, so am pretty familiar with the area.

Terri

Sorry, forgot to answer one of your questions, my kids both attend Canyon Creek Elementary.

After reading your post, I had to reply! You hit the nail on the head as far as Aurora is concerned. If I were to actually purchase real estate it would be in the far southern part of Aurora, by 470. IMHO, I would stay away from everything north of Iliff. Even Iliff is getting bad. i don't know the hoopla is about Denver and Aurora. I think it's very overrated. There is a gang problem. You can see that whenver you go out. The only reason why the statistics aren't higher is because you have a lot of homogenious people who love to go home and watch t.v. and then go outdoors and play in the mountains.
As far as people being RUDE! YES, I have to agree. The people here are very rude and snobbish. I am from the east coast too. I don't what it is but the people here have this chip on their shoulder like nothing is better than Denver or even Aurora for that matter. If you bring up anything wrong with this place, they will either rationalize it or explain how some other city is worse.

The other thing I'd like to mention is the roads and infastructure. I mean, Aurora has 225, a 2 line bypass that is constantly jam packed, with incompetent drivers. I have suffered from 3 hit and run accidents in the last two years alone here in Aurora. The drivers are daydreaming and clunking around with their cracked windshields from the crumbling roads and snowplows. the only decent part is the I 25 corrider, but the drivers are so slowwwwwwww here. It takes several seconds for them to absorb the green light and move. The timing of lights here is out of hand too. Beware, Aurora and Denver are speed trap happy. The speed limits are lowered to justify all the traps, but yet, the drivers still can't manage to handle that either.

Spiders! OMG, everyone I talked to has the same issue. Spiders are a serious problem here. I've lived in my apartment for about 6 weeks now and the place is literally 5 years old, and I've killed 20-30 spiders already! Black widows are a serious problem here too, so beware. I've sprayed and sprayed but they just keep coming. It drives me crazy and I can't sleep at night since I've already encountered several crawling across my bed. Like I said, I know others who have the same problem.

As far as the crime is concerned, statistically, Aurora has a higher crime rate than Denver itself, you can google it. Auto theft here is really high. The gangs have always been a problem and I would never want to put kids in the schools here. Maybe in Cherry Creek or Southwest Denver, but then again, it's home to Columbine killings for a reason. The kids are very clicky out here. I went to college here and experienced it firsthand, the parents aren't any better. People do have a standoffish attitude here, but I will admit you will find decent people here too. Overall, I'm leaving in a year, and look forward to bigger and better things. Denver overall just isn't for everyone, especially as much as everyone on here wants to proclaim its one of the best cities in the world. 300 days of sunshine is another fabrication. Please google the statistics and see for yourself. It's closer to 230 days. Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed

The area is very gangy and infested with bad stuff.
The new homes are being built on the other side of the freeway from this, I have a friend who lives there and likes it.
We lived at one point up towards Buckingham Square and HATED it.

The complex we were in was full of dry rot, we were waiting for our neighbor to come crashing through the ceiling.
This was not a cheap complex either.
8 different cars were broken into 14 were vandalized and ours was stolen, when we got it back it was driven over 3500 miles.
When we got the call from the officer to come pick it up, we arrived and he said he saw them but he didn't bother chasing them because it was 3 illegals and no one would do anything anyways.
I was furious. Where was our car? It was down by colfax and 6th of course.
Everything inside including my childrens stuff was stolen and the car was trashed.

The area is infested with spiders, now being from NYC and So Cal I can handle rats, earthquakes and bats.. but spiders.. I scream like a girl and run the other way and my wife constantly had to come into the room to kill it with a hammer.
Spiders were coming through the plumbing which i've heard is a big problem throughout co. so they would drop on your head from the shower or come flying out of the bathtub spout.

Traffic was horrible at certain times.
We found ppl very rude which is funny since yes we are from NYC.

I do wish we could have afforded downtown denver it was much more our style vs. aurora.

There was at one time a big problem with the developments, the foundation was buckling in from under the homes, not sure if that is still true to case.
But they build homes durring un desireable weather where other states wouldn't.

There are some good areas of Aurora i'm sure, I just haven't experienced them.
Hope that helps.

This has never happened to me, nor has anyone ever reported it to me. However, I believe it happened to you strooberri and CAS.

I have had this experience. CAS, you have only lived here six weeks. Trust me, it will get better.

Why don't you try rereading the post again before making assumptions. I lived in my APT for six weeks... It's like your reading what you want to think because your on the defensive. And no, it doesn't get better.

Default Aurora wins prestigious national award

I thought this was very interesting.

Aurora has been named the most technology-advanced city in America by the Center for
Digital Government.

Each year, the center conducts the Digital Cities Survey to examine how city governments use
digital technologies to better serve their citizens and streamline operations. The survey, now in
its seventh year, is open to all U.S. cities with populations of 30,000. Aurora repeatedly places
in the top 10 for cities with a population of more than 250,000.
“Continually striving for excellence in customer service has involved applying state-of-the-art
technology. We’re pleased to receive this prestigious national recognition for the efforts on
behalf of our citizens,” said City Manager Ron Miller.
This is a great honor for our IT department and the city,” City Manager Ron Miller said.
Aurora Information Technology staff, along with members of city council, received the award
at a convention last month.

City of Aurora wins Top Drop Award for conservation efforts

Western Resource Advocates recently
recognized the City of Aurora as one of
three Front Range water conservation
communities. The city was recognized as a
community that is “doing great things to
meet human water needs while protecting
the environment.” Recognition of the city’s
great strides in water stewardship by an
organization dedicated to protecting and
restoring the natural environment shows
sincere acknowledgement of Aurora’s
sustainable water programs and projects.

So, what do you think of this? While Aurora is good, I did not think of it as "technology-advanced city in America."

Default Whats the scoop on Aurora, CO?

Hello everyone!

I am a college student living in Arizona and am really glad I found this site! I am beginning my search for graduate schools and am really interested in the Physical Therapy program at the Colorado University at Denver Health Sciences Center in Aurora.

I know that this school is right off of Colfax and Peoria (13121 E. 17th Avenue) and I have heard some "not so good" things about Colfax in particular.

I plan on moving here with my girlfriend (and future wife), and the last thing I want is an unsafe environment for us to live in. Most notably the atmosphere at night along the streets and neighborhoods.

Is there anything that you guys can tell me about the immediate area surrounding the campus, and also what the typical weather is like in the winter? I am really hoping that this can be my future home!

Thanks in advance!

Well I wouldn't live in that area if I were you. If you want to live kinda close to the school you can find nice & safe places to live when you go farther south- towards Parker Rd (& even on Parker Rd. they are building homes/apts, etc- head south on it towards Arapahoe Rd). I work part time in that area (the other half of the week I'm downtown) & I get out of there by sunset if I can. Its fine during the day (at least for me it has been). I just make sure I take normal precautions (drive with my doors locked- a habit I got into when I lived in NC). Even a co-worker of mine (who has been working there for 14+ yrs) has said not to stay after dark if you can.
As for weather....it snows (obviously)...so be aware of that. I just moved here & it hasn't been too bad driving in it (knock on wood). Except for on Friday. I was in Aurora & it took me 2hrs to get home.
