Default Denver vs Fort Collins - Cost of Living Difference?

My husband and I will be retiring in a couple of years and we're strongly considering a move to Northern Colorado (from Seattle). We spent some time in Fort Collins this past summer and liked it very much, but we're also considering Golden, Littleton, Lakewood and other suburbs close to Denver.

Can anyone tell me the difference in cost of living between FC/Loveland and the Denver Metro area? I've used several online calculators, but they are very inconsistent.

We will be purchasing a home in whichever area we choose. I will continue to work a little from home, and my husband will be fully retired, so employment will not be an issue for us.

We are wondering about housing costs, medical care, groceries, entertainment - all the basics. We found FC very reasonable compared to Seattle, but not sure about Denver??

Groceries - King Soopers (aka Kroger) charges the same price statewide.

Sales Taxes - We have state + (many) local taxes, but in the long run, all about the same at 7.5%-8.5%. Some cities charge (Fort Collins at 2.25%) sales tax on food and some do not (Denver).

Water - Much cheaper in the city of Fort Collins than the City & County of Denver. But, water rates vary a lot depending upon exactly where you live.

Housing costs can be checked on this local site or on this national site. Rentals can be priced on padmapper.com

Thanks Dave and Mike. We're touring the area in February, so this should provide us with more answers.

Anyone know a good realtor in the Denver area?

People will send you DM's on realtor referrals as we don't allow those to be posted in the open forums, else it's advertising. Some realtors on here will also contact you via DM. If any of them get obnoxious let me know, I can send them packing, but I've never had any reports of that.

Sorry Mike. I forgot about that rule, and it's a good one. I've seen many a good forum ruined by scavengers who troll the web looking for ways to self-promote.

By the way, I've read lots of your posts and have found them quite helpful.
