We are also considering several private schools which would be closer to the city and stapleton....

tough decision.
I know im a tad bit late on this post, but if your hubby is working in Lone Tree, why not consider Lone Tree? The RidgeGate area of Lone Tree is very appealing in my opinion, and there is also a MasterPlanned Community in Highlands Ranch called BackCountry. You should check that out as well. You can't go wrong with RidgeGate, BackCountry or Tallyn's Reach. Coming from California myself, I would choose all three over Stapleton. Don't get me wrong, Stapleton is a nice area, but as soon as you step one foot outside of Stapleton you know you're NOT in Stapleton anymore.

Stapleton? Uh, no thanks. Close to the inner-city. Walmart closes at 10 PM because they've been robbed so many times. Denver Public Schools are typically among the lowest-achieving in the state. They may have a natural grocer, but you might get mugged on the way back to your car.
Wow. There are many, many nice neighborhoods in Denver city proper where nary a soul feels scared for their life simply by visiting Walmart after dark. At I get so tired of people bashing on DPS. There are lots of high-achieving schools within the system and typically those schools are on the south and east sides. Don't paint an entire city and school system with such a broad, negative brush.

That said, I would never choose to do a Stapleton to Lone Tree commute. Neither would I pick Tallyn's Reach although I see the appeal. I would pick something on the I-25 corridor that would give you a more suburban feel with the accessibility to downtown cultural options. Take a look at Homestead (Dry Creek & Holly area). You can either live on the Cherry Creek side or the Littleton side and its a great neighborhood.

Thanks so much for your input! Things have changed a bit since I've visited with my husband and little one twice in the past two months. Tallyn's Reach is definitely out. Stapleton believe it or not, is still a possibility. A 30-40 minute drive in Denver is a breeze compared to what we are used to in LA! Plus we'll spend at least twice a week going to dinner in the city and my hubby will be needing to get to the airport at least once a week for travel. I personally love the Stapleton community but we are also looking in or around Greenwood Village. It is also dependent on what school we get into (we've applied to various private schools, one near Stapleton, one near greenwood village.) Thanks again!

Thansk so much! Yes, we are also considering RidgeGate- though we haven't found any new homes that we love as much as a builder we found in Stapleton. Highlands Ranch is definitely not for us for a couple of reasons- too much urban sprawl and a little too conservative for our taste. As mentioned in another reply, we will be dining in the city twice a week and hubby needing to get to the airport at least once a week. Also, driving is sooo much less stressful compared to what we are used to in LA! A 35 minute drive from lone tree to stapleton really is a virtually traffic-less 35 minute drive (as opposed to a supposed 10 minute drive from Santa Monica to our home taking 45 minutes.)

Traffic free? I wonder what time of the day you were on the roads? Not during rush hour, it sounds like. I-225 and I-25 and frequently backed up-- sometimes LA style (I've lived there, so I'm not making this up). You're in for a world of suprise if you move here thinking there's no traffic. Only difference is the "rush hour" here doesn't last all day and night long like it does out there.

I would absolutely not commute from Stapleton to Lone Tree. Yes, Google Maps says it's about 35 minutes, but in traffic this would be a very ugly commute. In bad weather it could take longer than usual.

Why not try some of the south Denver neighborhoods, like University Hills, for instance? Much more sane commute, and you still have about the same proximity to city amenities that you would in Stapleton. I'm guessing that you'd want to live in new construction, but there is new infill construction (aka scrapes) in the southern part of the city too.

It sounds like if her husband will by flying out once a week, then he wouldn't be making the drive every day. And Stapleton to DIA is quick and easy.

If they'd every finish widening 225, it would probably take at least 10 min. off that commute!

Yes Denverian! that is right- thanks for listening Hubs often travels Monday through Wednesday and is home Thursday through Sunday. And Saturday and Sunday we'll most likely be eating out/exploring the city.

Hi vegaspilgrim- I said "virtually traffic-less" (compared to LA).
We drove from Lone tree to the city on Friday at 5/5:30 and though there was a little traffic it was easy breazy (compared to LA).

Bad weather is however something we didn't think of and something to consider!

We will of course rent for awhile to really see what we want to commit to before we buy.

Thanks!

Stapleton is great for that. We have memberships to the zoo, botanic gardens, Science and Nature Museum, Denver Art Musem, and the Children's Museum. And we can get to all those things in 15 min. or so.
