Most of the places that have a view of the skyline also have large, mature trees that block the view. But here are some possibilities close to downtown:

Washington Park

City Park West

Highlands and Lower Highlands (LoHi)

Baker

Sloans Lake

These are all gentrified or gentrifying neighborhoods.

How far away from downtown do you want to be? One of my friends lived on Green Mountain for awhile (in the west part of Lakewood) and all of the rear-facing windows on his house had views of downtown, though it was about 10 miles away from downtown.

Ruby Hill and Valverde have skyline views, but most people don't want to live in those neighborhoods.

You can see the skyline from a hill by my kids' school in SE Denver, but I'm unsure as to whether or not any homes have the same view.

SE Aurora (at a distance), and maybe even parts of Westminster and Thornton too.

Denver's gradual slopes don't provide height relative to your neighbor. So while the city isn't flat, views are not common. I'd look at google maps with the topo feature on to see potential neighborhoods, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. Most of the places with view potential are pretty downscale.

Actually if you don't mind living north a bit in Arvada, the views from Huntington Heights off of Carr Hill are some of the best in the metro. Most of the homes have at least two car garages. Another consideration is Genesee . You get the best of both from mt/city in that area; mule deer in the yard along with your skyline views.

Huntington Heights in Arvada is one of the best kept secrets in the area. It really surprises me that it does not get much more attention. The neighborhood reminds me of coastal heights near the ocean in California. The homes are very individually built with many well treed lots.

The area was very well hidden, in the past, before West 72nd. was pushed through the area, a few years ago. The residents had Majestic View Park

to themselves with limited access to others. Now the park is accessible from west 72nd. In addition, it is just "up" to road from the Arvada Center http://arvadacenter.org/ and a golf course. http://indiantree.apexprd.org/ It has very upscale amenities but reasonable pricing.
