As a recent retiree, I am considering relocation to Denver. I would appreciate information regarding the most desirable (clean, safe, quiet), yet affordable neighborhoods for apartment rentals within the city limits or very close-in suburbs, far enough away from student-dominated areas. Criteria are proximity to shopping and other frequently-necessary services, near reliable public transit. Prefer older, well-maintained buildings (no high-rises). Price range: approx. $600-900/mo. for a studio or one-bedroom apt., though am somewhat flexible. I am very progressive, physically active, follow a green, vegan and animal-friendly lifestyle. Please advise if locating such a place is feasible these days. Any additional information about living in Denver is also welcome.

Hope you moved to Boulder as it sounds like you would fit right in there.

Thanks for the follow up, redqueen. Can you tell me more about Boulder. I've heard that housing can be on the pricey side and that's why I had taken it off my possible relocation list. If you are familiar with the city, perhaps you can recommend specific neighborhoods, reputable property management companies or good ways to find appropriate apartments (other than Craigslist) or actual buildings that you are aware of.

I think redqueen was saying that because of your progressive, green lifestyle. Boulder is probably not an option as your price range could be tough for what you want, and where; most of Boulder in that price range is very very student friendly.

There may be a few options for you in Denver. Check out Highlands, West Highlands, and Sunnyside. These areas might be the best total package for you, and there are plenty of older posts to fill you in on these neighborhoods. One last area to look into would be Congress Park; this is an old Denver neighborhood that fits your needs too, parts of the area can be a little younger/student friendly, but it might be great for you.
