Yes, you are correct that Queens is one of the Boroughs of New York City and therefore part of NYC. However, what you fail to understand it is sort of a tradition and feeling in Queens that residents think they are a "suburbs" of NYC.
That is because there are many of us who remember Queens as a wide open area of "suburbia". Queens was settled in the suburban style of that time. It was settled much more in the late 1940s and 1950s and was considered out of the dense City of Manhattan and Brooklyn and the Bronx. I did not include Staten Island because even people in Staten Island view themselves as more suburbia and will use the term--I am going to "The City".
I was born in Queens and my parents lived in a new home that was built in 1948 in Laurelton(now part of Jamaica), Queens. There were many of these expansive subdivision built for returning GIs. It was near the new Idlewild Airport (now named JFK) which was built farther from "The City" at that time. There are many anomalies about NYC. Brooklyn and Queens are physically on Long Island but most New Yorkers do not view Brooklyn or Queens on Long Island--to them Long Island is Suffolk and Nassau County, which are not part of NYC.
There are also areas of Queens that are considered more of like a "suburbs", as North Queens as the OP stated, and other areas that would be considered more "urban" such as Flushing, where the New York World's Fair was held in 1964.
Perhaps as time goes on and the memories die with the people, the sense of Place of Queens will be defined more in the mind as in the City and not a "suburbs" but we are not there yet.

I moved from NH to Denver two years ago. There's a few things I miss about the NE but many things i dont miss: the humidity, the long cold gray winter months, the summer days of endless rain.
Things I miss: the ocean, good seafood, Dunkins on every corner , fair season.
I love it here in Colorado. Its beautious!! Im getting used to the more layed back nature of the place as a whole..was hard to get used to. especially in lines at stores...just too friendly...cmon...places to go things to do! no time for chit chat haha come on out...you can always go back if ya have to but...i think i'll stay!

I was born and raised in NYC and then moved around the country for my job. Lived in Denver in the 90's and loved it. Moved back to NY (Long Island) 9 years ago and I hate it. I can't wait to move back to Colorado.

Care to share your thoughts on Denver?
We moved from NJ last summer. I won't repeat everything said above which I mostly agree with. The one thing I would reiterate is that people are laid back and seem to have the time & inclination to pick up a conversation anywhere. It took some getting used to, but it is a really nice aspect of living here.

We absolutely loved our first trip to Denver. We have booked our second trip at the end of April. We would have come back sooner but didnt want to chance getting stuck in snow.
We are definetly going to move there sometime this year. I am waiting on a promotion at work before I start applying for jobs, but that is the only thing holding me back.
The biggest driver is the house you get for the money. I am sick of paying $2000 in rent a month and get completely turned off when I see a $400,000 house that needs to be gutted come out in either NY or CT. Not to mention that I am going to be paying 10K in taxes here when the most I would be paying there is 4k. Lets not mention gasoline which has now risen to $4 a gallon, and its not even spring!!
I loved the sense of community in Highlands Ranch and Broomfield. Especially the community centers with the pools and gyms. I would not recommend that anyone buy a house right away though. Our plan is to rent for however long it takes to find the perfect place. And there seems like there are many "perfect" places to live there. Obviously the right one for us will eventually present itself, and then we will buy a home.
The area had everything we would need and want. Most areas seems really clean and the scenery was incredible. It would be tough moving away from family, but owning a nice big house and living in such a beautiful place is worth it.
Now lets just hope I find a great job so I can get the heck out of this Rectangle of Hell (CT)! We are so done with the Northeast. We wish we would have found Denver years ago.

I moved to Denver from the Northeast with a five year stopover in California on the way. I lived in Denver for a decade, and liked it, but moved back to the Northeast 5 years ago.
I find that I can find things to like about living pretty much anywhere. Things I liked about Denver were the winter weather, the lack of humidity in the summer, and the lack of mosquitos. Things I didn't like were the heat in the summer (90 days over 90 is brutal regardless of whether or not it's a dry heat), the aridness, and the miller moths (uggh.)
A huge factor for me is that I don't ski, so the mountains weren't a huge draw. On the other hand I really really love the ocean, and found that being away from the coast made me said.
Now I live in the woods an hour and fifteen minutes from the beach... heaven for me, but not for everyone.

jacoby23,
Gas is often cheaper in the winter time in the Rockies. In the summer, it is often more expensive here than in other parts of the country excluding NY and CA which are typically the most expensive year round. I know CT gas is expensive, but that's largely in part because they eliminated toll roads after a truck driver smashed into a toll booth and killed a toll collector some years ago.
You will be able to find a newer home with lower property taxes than you paid in Connecticut. Just watch out when you transfer your vehicle registration over to Colorado. I know CT has tax on cars, but I'm not sure how high it is. In CO new cars are taxed at 2.1% of 85% of the value and it goes down from that. In other states, property taxes are higher but vehicle registration fees are lower. Also, Colorado has administrative fines for not registering your vehicle soon after you move... you only have 90 days.

My wife and I are planning on moving to Denver in little over a month. We will be moving into a home in centennial (about 2 miles south of the streets of southglenn mall).
We definitely could afford a lot more house than in the northeast. We got a recently updated 1980 house walking distance from starbucks, park, einstien bagels (which I would take anyday over dunkin), and a great Thai restaurant.
When I told my co-workers about the property taxes they said "what, that the quarter rate"
"no, thats my annual rate"
So far gasoline is signficantly lower than CT. It is almost $4.00 in CT and it is just above $3.00 in CO (most of that, I assume, is CT taxes)
Electricity is about 50% less in Colorado
You can still get milk on sale for $2.00
I have no freaking idea why Colorado gets stone crab, but they do (whole foods had it, and so did Del Frisco)
So yeah, cost of living is a lot better

Wrong.
Gasoline tax information - Connecticut Gas Prices
Ignorance is bliss.
Knowledge is power.
"Local experts say the reason our gas prices remain low is because we get most of our supplies from refineries in Canada, through a landlocked pipeline that most other states can’t access."
But, if
YOU think it is taxes, then go for it.
