When I visited Denver I noticed that towns like Broomfield and Highlands ranch had recreation centers with pools, gyms, etc. are there any other towns that have the same type of rec centers?

In Boulder County (from the top of my head):

Boulder (several)
Longmont
Louisville
Lafayette.

Castle Rock has one.

Some others I can think of:

Wheat Ridge
Lakewood
Evergreen
Commerce City

In Jeffco there is the Foothills Rec Foothills Park & Recreation - Littleton, CO - Golf, Fitness, Pools, Senior Programs, Wellness

In Arapahoe County & Lone Tree there is South Suburban South Suburban Parks and Recreation

There are subdivisions that have pools, near gyms. There are townhome communities that have pools and small fitness areas.

Are you talking about a rec center that is part of the town's fee, i.e. the HOA includes the rec centers for highland ranch?

Too me. . .other than that, not sure what the big difference between "rec center" and your local lifetime fitness, ymca, etc. I.e aren't they everywhere? some are bigger/better features than others?

Municipal rec centers are usually owned by the city/town/etc. They are a little different from the places you mention in that they usually don't require you to "join", ie, pay a membership fee, though some sell memberships that get you in at a discount. They tend to have classes, activities for all ages as well, it's not just for adults who want to work out. Most are subsidized by their municpality, and people pay taxes to build and operate them. The YMCAs are private non-profit, and are comparable, but not exactly the same.
