Hello:

I am relocating to Denver and have no idea what the surrounding cities are like. I have a limited budget and have found homes in these cities: Athmar Park, Globeville, Barnum, Mar Lee, elyria swansea, highland ranch and littleton. Can you please tell me about these cities and how safe they are? I am a single female.

Thank you so much for all your help!

Given that you named 5 Denver neighborhoods and 2 other cities, I would suggest that you spend about 4 hours reading previous posts here before asking your question.

We love to help people, but you have to do some/most of the work. As someone who is about to have or has a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree, I am sure that you would agree that extensive research might be appropriate before jumping into buying a house.

FYI, houses in greater Denver cost 1.5 to 2x those in Independence, OH. And, the lot sizes here are 50-75% smaller.

Question number 1 - where is work?
Question number 2 - what's important to you in a community?

davebarnes: I own a house already, so yes I do understand the details of researching before buying...hence my coming onto this forum and asking questions. Pardon my ignorance, however I have not lived in a city such as Denver where I had to distinguish neighborhoods from cities etc. I have been researching the past few days between buying and renting and know nothing about the city or surrounding areas thus I thought I would ask people to help me out to decrease my own research time a bit seeing as I have very little time before I have to relocate. Please refrain from responding to my posts if all you have to write is condescending responses. You know nothing about me except what you have gathered from my previous posts.

2bindenver: I will be working downtown and surrounding cities. Most important is safety.

Being in a safe neighborhood means different things to different people, most folks would consider themselves safe in the areas you listed.

Highlands Ranch is a subdivision, Littleton is a larger city, and a mailing address in two other counties.

Do you travel around for work? Is a house, or a condo in your future? Do you want a garage, a yard, a commuinty pool?

The five City & County of Denver neighborhoods that you picked are some of the LEAST SAFE in the city.

Spend some time looking at the maps found at

and

Question #3 - What is your budget?

Longstech - It is unfortunate that people feel the need to be condescending (verging on a bully attitude) in an area where you have come for assistance. Good luck with your move!!!

Those are some of the poorest and scariest neighborhoods in Denver. I would not feel safe walking around any of them, let along living there. Look elsewhere. BTW, there are many good and great neighborhoods in Denver-- actually most of Denver is great. You just happened to name the worst of the city.

highland ranch and littleton.
Now we're talking realism. These are two safe, good suburbs. There's both a small city of Littleton (in Arapahoe County) and a large unincorporated area in the SW metro area in Jefferson County also known as "Littleton" (ex-- where Columbine High School is). Both are good. The whole south metro area is good.

Here is my take (as a 43-year-old Denver native):
Barnum, Mar Lee: NO
Globeville, Athmar Park, Swansea: HELL NO
Highlands Ranch and Littleton: Nice but a long way from downtown.
