To clarify for everyone:
Highlands is a neighborhood in Denver, just northwest of LoDo, Downtown, etc.
Highlands Ranch is a suburb, located in Douglas County, about 20 miles south of downtown Denver.

I live in Eastern Market. I love the neighborhood feel that it has despite being right in the city. I also have 2 dogs so I need a yard for them (the house I'm in has a backyard and faces a dog park - condos/apts are not an option for me). I also love going to the outdoor market on the weekends after grabbing coffee and that I have a variety of restaurants/ bars to choose from on the evenings. It's centrally located and a short 15 minute metro ride to where my office is. There are also a variety of electic shops that are about 3 blocks from my house. Basically I'm looking to replicate this same feel in Denver :-)

I was raised in DC. There is nothing here like there - you cannot replicate a city with a 400 year history with a 150 year old one...We do have neighborhoods that have wonderful amenities, quirkiness, and personalities...Colorado produces lots of fruits and veggies (think Germantown in the 1970's)- so there are farmer's markets in most towns - some better than others.
What else is important to you?

Try Englewood!
I lived in Englewood for 8 years as a single, professional gal and loved it! An area near the "City Center" or "Civic Center" is worth checking out; I think real-estate folks call it Broadway Heights. The area includes a Bally's Fitness, lots of restaurants and shops, and is near the light rail station (Englewood Station, which has a wonderful fountain that attracts people all year long).
Home prices in that area vary widely, but for $300K you will do fine. It's great, easy access to Denver or the Tech. Center for work and there are hospitals in the area, depending on your career. DU is also nearby and that keeps the area culturally active.
I miss Englewood greatly. But now I get to live in a wonderful place, Fruita Colorado.
Hope this helps....
