My husband and I are moving to Denver this summer for him to attend graduate school. I am looking for a teaching position in Denver teaching English at the secondary level. I am applying as an alternative certification candidate as I have my masters degree by no certification. I realize that Denver is a crazy competitive place for teaching jobs. I have been applying since January and have had two final interviews but no job. I'm wondering if anyone has some advice on how to get a job on an alternative certification. I am open to working anywhere that is drivable from Denver. Do schools ever hire at the last minute, in August?

yes they do...but you might have to settle for an ESL paraprofessional first and work on getting your credential.

Most jobs are posted in April because that is the date by which a non-tenured teacher must be informed that his/her contract is not being renewed. Hiring is usually done by May 15.

It is possible that a school will hire a person over the summer or in August, but it is pretty rare. These positions become available if a person must unexpectedly resign over the summer, or if enrollment increases in a school to justify hiring another teacher.

Most of the upper tier school districts will not hire an English teacher on an alternative license because they can find someone who already has a teacher license.
