There are local businesses that occupy the niches filled in other states by Ikea and Trader Joe's. At least, AFW (American Furniture Warehouse) sells a lot of different kinds of furniture and I would be hard pressed to believe Ikea is better. As for Trader Joe's.. in the north suburbs, there is a place called Total Beverage. There are only two stores right now, one at 92nd & Sheridan in Westminster and the other at 104th & Washington in Northglenn. They sell literally thousands of different kinds of beer, wine and liquor, and are pretty cheap too.

pittnurse, it is like a bargain whole foods!!! Great quality of merchandise alot cheaper. although I think while it isn't as great as Trader Joes (and no alcohol sales of course), Sunflower Market is a good comparison. Their ready made items are about 1/2 the cost of Whole Foods.
Oberon- I agree, we have some nice gems too. American Furniture is getting better although they skew way more traditional than Ikea. I wish we had an ikea as well, I think we will in time. There are some great unique stores in Larimer Square, Highlands, etc... but we do have a lot of chains... just like everywhere else.

sunflower may as good of a comparison as it gets here, but maybe not quite comparable. whole foods has organic food, as well, but trader joe's is way less fancy. sunflower's between the two as far as i can see... and TJ's sells wine. mmmm.

I would guess TJ's has to obey the alcohol laws of the state, which would most likely mean no wine in Colorado. The liquor stores here do not sell food. My DD has been to Sunflower, thought the produce not as good as WF or even her local Safeway. I cannot corroborate.

unless they were to open up in glendale. strip bars and wine at grocery stores are fair game in that part of town. i agree on your sunflower assessment.
