My wife and I are planning a holiday in the first week of November in Denver..and are planning to spend 2 days driving from Denver to Utah to see the arches. Since we have never been in that area..would appreciate some advice from locals.

1-what kind of driving conditions can one generally expect. (we are driving through vail)

2-We are going for the scenic route and any idea on the additional places en route? any scenic small town to visit/ stay in?

3-We have an economy rental car: will that be ok for the mountain driving? we are planning to leave friday evening and return to denver Sunday evening...is that sufficient time given the road etc?

thanks

John

It's a long drive for that short of a trip. It IS scenic, so maybe that will make it worth it.

The weather will probably be OK. One never knows in the mtns, but it's not the height of winter yet. The car should be fine in good weather.

Do what you can, then. Just know you will spend a lot of time in the car.

Anything from snow to dry roads. It's very hard to tell.

In Utah, definitely make sure to take Highway 128 off I-70 to Moab instead of Highway 191. While 191 is the straighter/faster route, 128 is way more scenic. If the weather is good, you can drive over Loveland Pass (exit 216 off I-70 in CO) instead of through the Eisenhower Tunnel for some great alpine views.

Most cars in decent shape will do fine. Just drive carefully if the weather is bad. You may hit returning ski traffic to Denver on Sunday evening (ski traffic usually ramps up as November progresses).

It takes us six hours just to drive to Moab. That's a really long drive to be able to spend about a day and half sightseeing. There's so much to see in Colorado, why not just spend that time here?

The drive can easily be done in a day. I'm not sure if you want to take along time driving, or spend more time once you get there.
