Default Relocate to Denver Now or Wait a year?

Hello. I had posted a few days ago regarding a possible relocation from Kansas City to Denver. I have been offered a job in the Tech Center which was totally unexpected. We started about a month ago considering the idea of relocation there but had no idea an opportunity would happen this fast. Background on my situation, I have a wife and 2 small children (7 and 4) to consider as well. I am a structural engineer so obviously the job market for that occupation must be considered as well. Right now I don't think it's all that great, so limited opportunities I'd say but who knows what the future holds.

I guess I just have a general question for other people that have transplanted out there or anyone else with an opinion on the matter. We are a bit reluctant to move now due to the suddeness of the situation but should we go anyway due to the fact an offer has been extended? The offer is solid, not spectacular, but good enough. The question I guess is would it be better to wait a year to save some cash, get our house ready to sell and all that and try and secure another offer next spring? Or is it crazy to turn down a good offer now just to wait 10 months to try and find another one?

I'm going crazy with this decision and not sure this forum is the best place to seek advice, but I thought I'd give it a shot in case. Thanks!

I think your a planner and you'd be better off waiting until you planned it all out. Unless your jobless you should probably wait until you can make better plans.

Mic111....that is what I was thinking as well.....unfortunately. I'm soooo ready to be out there but I guess it would make more sense to plan it out over 10 months as opposed to 1 month. Thanks for the input. I appreciate it!

I would say that you should talk to a realtor and make sure you can afford to sell your house--could be rough depending on when you purchased. That was the biggest thing that almost held us back from moving (we are underwater on our mortgage).

Selling the house is obviously a huge part of the equation. We've been in the house for 10 years and it's in good shape and should be relatively easy to sell I think. But I don't know that for a fact. Hence why perhaps if we had more time to put it on the market, that might be the smarter way to go.

Regardless, talking to a realtor is definitely a good idea and something I will do.

When do you have to accept the position and start working? Do you have enough time to sell your home?
Can you talk to the company to see if they are willing to wait for you to sell your home?

I'd go. Getting a new job is the hardest part of the moving equation for most people. Maybe you could rent a really cheap room to start your work, and your wife could stay behind and sell the house. If I was planning a definite move and got a job offer I don't think I could walk away. Who knows how easy or hard it will be to get another one down the line. Planning is important, but I think things usually work out especially if you have a job lined up.

Pointless to plan stuff based on a year into the future. Make your decision on what you have in front of you right now.

Thanks for replies. They would give me basically the month of July to give notice to my job here and try and sell the house. Not exactly a lot of time. I'm trying to figure out now if there is some way I could ease into the move cause I seriously doubt I can sell my house in a month. I'd probably have to go back and forth for a few months to finish things here.

strawberrykiki.....I hear you. That's why I'm so hesitant to say no. I have no idea when that next offer might come.
