I would like to take up boxing, but all I see living in the burbs is LA Boxing and frankly it's looks quite yuppie and not designed to teach skills but make people feel good. Where does a guy go who want the real thing, because I took several months of self defense that was quite dead ( not alive at all ), practicing against only compliant partners. That's no good. You fight and defend like you practice. That's why I want to go back to the old school boxing gym. Like Rocky. I am not afraid to go to grittier parts of town but being white I don't need to get jacked leaving the boxing gym at night either. Does this exist in Denver Metro and if so where please?

A school that teaches Muay Thai might also fit the bill. It certainly wasn't for the namby-pamby when I trained. That was years ago, and in Chicago, but I would guess the training is still intense.

I would actually prefer Muay Thai I just want alive, non compliant training. It's just so much of martial arts is taught in dead, compliant manner and that is dangerous. You get a false sense of security when you go to use those skills trained against complaint partners when you are attacked in the street and get your ass whopped. The only alive martial arts I see is BJJ, Boxing, and some Muay Thai.

How can you teach someone to defend when they aren't sparring or getting hit. They have no sense of how dynamic a fight is. The worst is Karate and their katas just sad IMO. Most black belts I know never use that stuff in street fight or self defense situation they revert back to what they learned as kid. Judo looks pretty awesome and useful too they actually throw on mats and that's good.

And honestly I do have a temper from time to time so it would be a good outlet for me to spar.

There's a YMCA downtown with a boxing program that may be worth checking out.
