In the past five years, I've had two bikes (both locked with cable locks; only use U-locks now), a bike tire/rim, a bike seat, and (today) a high quality bike light stolen.

I think they try to portray Denver as a safe city, but I think most of the crimes that happen here are non-violent. Denver seems to have a lot of kleptos living here. Keep your things locked up and away from the public. This city seems to run rampant with klepto vagrants who will steal your things in plain sight and in the middle of the day.

Wife's car was just broken in to at the middle of the day at Broadway & Yale because she left some canvas grocery bags on her passenger seat. They were empty, but it cost us a new window.

In Cap Hill, I had a bike stolen in front of my apartment around 13th and Grant.

Had another bike stolen right off of Broadway in front of the Main Library in the middle of the daylight. Apparently no passerbys thought it suspicious that a dude was cutting through my cable lock.

I had a bike seat and tire/rim stolen downtown across from the Qwest building where I worked.

And I just had my light stolen yesterday in my apartment building near 12th and Colorado.

My buddy was telling me last night he had his laptop stolen right out of his apartment near 13th and Sherman.

Get your crime data at Crime Statistics and Maps | Denver Police Department

Capitol Hill is higher than average for the City & County of Denver.

Never had a thing stolen here in 3 years. Same thing in Vegas and everyone talks about how high crime is there. Only times I had problems were when I lived closer to a downtown. Never had a problem in the more suburban areas.

We've been fine so far, nothing stolen in 1 year living downtown w/ 2 cars. One weekend, we did walk into our work parking garage and saw 3 cars with busted windows. Kind of ticked me off that the building didn't alert people of this incident (they've sent alerts when these sorts of things have happened in nearby garages).

We're used to living in higher-crime areas than this, though. The number of laptops/electronics/shopping bags I see in plain sight makes me think "these people are just asking for their car to get broken into." Or people with gigantic TVs set up right in front of a window w/o closed blinds. Just common sense stuff.

I'm about to buy my 1st bike, though, and theft is something I'm worried about, because no matter what kind of lock you've got, it's still possible to steal stuff off it.

Default In 1984

Living in Indian Creek.
They kicked in our front door.
Put the stereo (remember those?), TV in our Saab and drove it away.
They did leave us with a stolen Chevy.
Got the car back in OK condition.
Burglar-proofed the doors for about $150.

The crime rate for the last 10 years in Indian Creek has been close to zero.
