Where not to live?
Hello all,
I am considering moving to the great State of Colorado, specifically the Denver area. I have been there once and remember the industrial looking part of Denver, but cannot remember where it was. I did not like that area, and would not want to live there. Where is that?
Ive heard Aurora is not a great place to live. Are there any other stay away from spots? I tend to lean toward the middle of the road places, not too rich, not too poor, not too busy, not too boring/quiet. Im 36/m single no kids, and want to be able to meet other singles my age (29-36) near where I live. If you had an average income, where would you like to live and why? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The area along Interstate 270 in Commerce City, especially south of 270 and north of 70, is probably what you're thinking of.

Why don't you tell us exactly what your price range or rental budget is and while your at it tell us where you will be working?

Central denver around I70 and I25 is the globeville neighborhood of denver that sits right on industrials door step.. I would avoid that area and southern Commerce city is a little rough. They have that new reunion development up there that i did some work on and its really nice. Also some of denvers eastern areas are a little rough such as montbello. You really should just check out any places that strike your interest and just go from there.

Thanks for your reply. My price range for renting is up to 500/month. I would not mind renting a room in a house from someone. I do not have a job yet, but hope to carry over my IT skills and use them there.

Just to dispell your myth about Aurora, Aurora ain't that bad! It's a large city and there are many areas that are safe. Even the Colfax corridor is not as bad as people suggest. "Original Aurora" is a city project where they are trying to restore and revive the area on Colfax. There are some interesting developments in those neighborhoods...public art, new condos, etc.

That price may get you a one bedroom or efficiency apt in some of the "hip" neighborhoods. It will get you a larger apt somewhere else in the city.

Hi handel007,
Hope this helps you out a little. In regards to Aurora, I myself live there in an "OK" neighborhood." I am around 6 - 7 miles south of Colfax and as you go further southeast Aurora is actually pretty nice. It is very spread out as someone stated above so there are areas that are kind of older looking and don't look as nice but that is all some people can afford so it's not necessarily all that bad. That is one thing I noticed in the Denver area, there are like scattered parts of old and new development all over the place and intertwined. It's not like some cities and you go to a section and there is a really bad of town for miles too unsafe to drive through or a part of town where all the millionaires live. There are half million dollar homes scattered all over Aurora and newer nicer areas also. Don't limit yourself to Aurora if you have that flexibility because just like Aurora, most other areas have older and newer development also. You may have to drive through Denver and it's areas and make a judgment for yourself and find that place that just feels like home. But pretty much all over Denver there should be something for you. The industrial area that you are talking about is mostly along eastern/middle I70 - which sucks because most people see this when they drive through Denver and that is not even a touch of how pretty it is here. I though the same thing my first time through Denver so I can relate. In my opinion, go to the outer edges (North of 25 and 70, along E470/C470, and look for newer development if crime is a concern at all. Also I have heard that commerce city looks appealing but is a little higher on crime but you should be able to research that on Google or something. If you are looking for singles, I would look around downtown because most people with kids don't live down there.
Good luck on your journeys and if I can be more help just let me know.
