I am a Denver mom to two young kids, we live in a suburb called Commerce City, in the Reunion development and love it. New homes, very affordable for the area, 15 minutes to DIA, 30 minutes to downtown, the zoo, Nature and Science Museum. Our neighborhood has a 52 acre park with trails for walking, jogging, and biking, fishing lakes, a rec center, many playgrounds, and an outdoor pool with water slide. Tons of families and moms, super easy to meet people (and I'm an introvert). A very good charter school right in our neighborhood. We do have super high property taxes, the public schools are not highly rated (but this is a problem everywhere depending on what you can afford). Not a lot of shopping of restaurants here, but we do have one of the biggest grocery stores in the state (brand new) and a fab library system. Just another option to consider. We are renting a 2 bedroom townhome here while we are building a new home and our rent is $1,500/month. Good luck!

Thank you! My hubby actually found out his territory will be including Colorado Springs, also, so I think we have it narrowed down to Castle Rock. Any opinions or knowledge on Castle Rock?

Castle Rock is a essentially a boomburb. It was a historically small town that exploded over the past 30 years. It is geographically isolated from the rest of the Denver area.

Pros: Affordable housing, new construction, cool old downtown area, access to Colorado Springs, family friendly

Cons: Sprawl, traffic, not walkable, ease of getting into/out of Denver (esp. during rush hours), no public transportation

Make up your mind about: Schools (It is a well documented fact that I am not a fan of Douglas County Schools), (Chains stores, restaurants, etc.), Conservative politics

The two big problems I see with Castle Rock is water supply and train noise. The problem with the water supply is that they are on the non-renewing aquifer that is being depleted. Eventually they will have to acquire surface water rights and that will be a huge tax hike for the residents.

"Because of its location, Castle Rock currently gets almost all of its water from aquifers, via deep wells. This is an expensive way to get water but for now is the only option available."

A town on renewable surface water rights (meaning that the water comes from the snow pack) is a better place to invest your real estate dollars. The more senior the rights the better as when water is low the senior rights take precedents over the newer water rights.

Some people are bothered by constant train horns. Only you know if your one of them.
