I'm looking for our perfect town in Colorado. Here is our criteria. Population under 20,000 preferably. No higher than 30,000. Near the mountains. Family oriented town, Strong community and I prefer there to be a downtown location within the town. The towns that have been thrown around are
Golden-the downside is a ton of sex offenders
Evergreen- I worry it's too rural.
Castle Rock-seems family oriented but 50,000 people..too many also far away from mountains
Louisville-don't know much
Lyons-some make it seem like there is no community from only having around 5,000 people

We are moving this summer and we are stumped. Please help shed some light on these towns there is only so much you can learn online.

What is your budget? What do you want in a home (land? Bedrooms? Sq footage?)? Where is work going to be and is commute an issue?

Work is from home so commute isn't an issue. We need a 4 bedroom home 550,000 is probably our max.

It doesn't sound like you have ever visited the Front Range where all of your choices are located. Are you moving here for a job? As mentioned, where you work and your tolerance for a commute are going to be the main determinants, along with how much money you are bringing with you.

You should visit.

Every town you mentioned, with the exception of Lyons, are suburbs. Yes, even Evergreen. The Front Range does not have a series of quaint little towns as you would find in New England. The Denver area is a series of sprawling suburbs where you don't know where one ends and the other begins. For the most part, school districts are massive, so you do not have the situation of a school district for each town. For example, Jefferson County (including Golden and Evergreen) has 500,000 people and one school district with 80,000 students. Boulder County (Louisville) has 300,000 people and most students attend the same district. Castle Rock is in the Douglas County school district, which has 61,000 students, and which is also under siege from a fundamentalist school board hell bent on destroying the district.

Lyons is a great little community that is an actual town, but it was devastated by the floods in September. Students are in the St. Vrain school district, with over 30,000 students.

If you could live anywhere, why bother with the Front Range mess?

Steamboat Springs, Salida, Durango, Montrose, Loveland....

We can move anywhere. The front Range is what you hear most of so we went that direction. Thanks for the other towns I'll look into them
