I recall reading, years ago, that in Chicago every city trash truck is fitted with plows to assist in the plowing of snow. I got the impression that since it snowed a fair amount there that they were used to it and well equipped and trained in plowing.

Nice pics to the OP! They belong in the Colorado Pics thread if they aren't there already.
It's funny how people live in the city and ****** and moan how their little streets aren't being plowed sufficiently, etc. and they blame the mayor while there are 6 blizzards in a row! Meanwhile, there are towns out east that have grocery stores with mere crumbs on the shelves because you JUST CAN'T GET FOOD trucked in. It's a state wide problem! Not just poor widdow denver! BooHoo!
For God's Sake! There's livestock and wild animals that are literally starving to death looking at food that they can't get to. And some Denver resident's want to complain to the mayor.
There's got to be a limit for this. Sometimes the city just shuts down for a bit. If you're not bleeding to death or starving to death, you ought to get out of your own head and see how you can help someone else out. That'll warm you up a bit.
We just won't get 6 storms in a row like that for some time to come.
I'd like to see some snow before next year. That would be nice.

So true, this snow storm and consequental storms were devastating to the cities and livestock in southeastern Colorado. In 2003, folks died from their roofs collapsing here in Denver. You are so right McGowdog, people need to get out and see how they can help one another. I so saw the good in my neighbors helping one another that it outshined any troubles I was having. Nothing in my post and dialogue indicate that I was unsympathetic to anyone who was stranded or had major problems. I am only pointing out that it is an aspect of living in Denver/Colorado and only how I appreciated this natural event. Traveling, work, heck Christmas are all stressful with snow or not and this snow made me stop and focus on other issues like taking my neighbors cat to the vet because I have an SUW and she does not, getting groceries for my mom because she could not, pushing cars out of the alley that was never plowed. The good came out of me and those around me amidst the complaining and stress. p.s. I am a native and have been in existence for 41 years, so this is not the first and last snow experience.

You're an old man like me. Oh no! I wasn't scolding anyone in particular. Except maybe people in-general who go whining to the mayor when a natural disaster happens.
Go complaining to God! Or, NO! Don't! Be careful what you pray for. That's probably why we're in the mess we're in! God, gimme gimmie gimmie! God, please make this go away!

Hey, who you callin' old McGowdog? LOL. I was replying to a few post prior to yours. So true, we blame and get angry when things don't go right or our world is toss into a whirl temporarily. Currently, I am at fault for not know more about what the city has planned for the next snow storm or how I can help on a individual basis. I have made it a point to know my neighbors and what their needs might be should this happen again, but there is probably so much more I could be doing instead of spur of the moment blaming for my troubles.

If a car is as old as you and me, it's considered an antique!
Bring on the snow!

If a car was as old as you and I, it would be in the junk yard and used for only the good parts!

And you two were obviously lucky you didn't have to go to work (as I did) or have family coming in, as our neighbors did. Think of being in college and being stranded. My neighbor was lucky someone could take her home. There were people stranded for days. Once we could get out and stores were open again, the common question to those of us who had kids away at college was: "Did everyone get home OK?" I agree with making the best of a situation, but do have some empathy for others who weren't at home when the storm hit. Yes, kristen, you did say that, but I don't think you grasped the whole picture, when you said "I tend to just make the best of what I'm given". You were at home drinking hot chocolate, not in some strange airport with no way to get home.

I work from home, but had to take vacation time to shovel snow! It wouldn't have been a big deal if I were only inconvenienced for a few days with the horrible streets. As I remember, it snowed about a foot a week later, and then 6" the week after that, and more after that, all without a single plow coming down my street. I was inconvenienced for nearly TWO months! And it cost me over $500 to fix my oil pan, thanks to it hitting solid ice over and over for two months. At one point I tried to dig down to the pavement in front of my house and discovered a foot of solid ice. It was ridiculous.
I understand if it snows 2' in early April that they wouldn't bother plowing residential streets since it'll melt so fast. But in December, they better have a plan. I doubt it will happen again anytime soon, but the city should have a plan. And how much did it cost to finally bring in those scrapers to dig out the compacted ice and haul it away in dump trucks? Millions, I'm sure. They got to my street in very late Feb./early March sometime, when it was finally fast melting anyway.

Yes, he was responding to me. I was trying to think of a diplomatic way of saying "don't be smug" about "I just make the best of everything" when you really weren't inconvenienced that much. That was my point. And Denver will never, in my lifetime, be prepared for a major snowstorm, in my opinion. I've seen enough and it's always snafus all the way. And it's always "Wait till next time. We'll be more prepared." I've been waiting a long time.
