Default Family moving from Atl to Denver area

We are a family of 5 (plus 2 small dogs). Kids are 10, 8 and 1. Husband has job offer in Boulder and I, a Federal Employee, will likely work in downtown Denver. We need suggestions for areas to look in for a home, school districts (1 child with special needs and 1 gifted). We would like something similar to what we have now - a 3000sf ranch with 4 BRs, 3Baths, 3 car garage on a full finished basement in a planned community. We will probably need to build because one of the kids is in a wheelchair. Atlanta house in low $400K, Denver house, maybe $500-600K? Is that doable? Where do you all suggest we look?

Thanks

You provided a good post with lots of good info. I am sure you will get a lot of good replies. Unfortunately I am not too familiar with the north side of Denver.

This is off the top of my head, but . . . I think to build new at that size, you may spend more than you are thinking. My 27 yr old house, 2500 sq ft including basement, 2 car garage is probably worth about $400-500K.

If you have not verified that you will be working in downtown Denver, you might want to. The largest concentration of federal employees is in the Denver Federal Center, which is located in Lakewood. (I believe that's still the case even after the govt downsizing in the 80s.) There are US govt jobs downtown, but not that many.

Sorry I can't help you with where to look. Given that one of your children is in a wheelchair, I can see why you want a single-level home but I'm not familiar enough with ranch style housing to know where you would have the best luck, given the job locations of you and your husband. From what I've seen, though, I think it might be a bit difficult to find a 3000sf ranch in a planned community since these would be newer subdivisions and most of the newer subdivisions here emphasize two-story homes.

Best of luck to you!

Default Broomfield

Broomfield may be a good choice. It's a very easy commute to Boulder and reasonable to downtown. Good luck.
