You'll also meet some of the most demented people you'll ever encounter. Military service is all fine and dandy, but go in with your eyes open, because it does have it caveats.

Find a gym or an out door group ,
One thing for sure , even religious groups tend to stay away form the drug culture for the most part, and so far as the hypocrisy goes , blow the whistle on those whom are hypocrites to their piers .
See if they do any thing about it .
IMO If I see some one in danger, and say nothing, while I could have said something, I am no better than they whom guide them there.
It's simple ,
Excuse me, but your pants are on fire !
I don't know the people, I don't live there ,neither have I observed such a thing, as those carrying a bible in one hand, and porn in the other. It that the truth or is a some one making a false assumption just for an argument ?
Not all people that go to church are committed christians, I have observed folks that simply go for the music some even leave when it's over.
Every one has their own reasons for begin connected or observing.
No matter what group you might find, there are all kinds of folk in them, and it's pretty much up to you to lay the ground work for who you are, and the line you hold in your own life .
And that is true through out your life too.
Much as I have friends in church ,some of my more faithful friends have been people of other faiths, or no particular faith at all. Search and rescue , amateur radio club, and other civic groups.
Even as noble as these are , there are those that are good friends, and those that seem to have their own agenda. their life, their prerogative.

Oh, okay... I'll take the bait. The type of hypocrisy I'm speaking of is pretty rife in religion, in socio-political issues, in day-to-day life. It's nothing stated for the purpose of bringing an argument, but if someone wants to bring it, bring it. I'm just calling it as I've seen (and continue to see) it.

Doesn't your martial arts provide you with some social contacts? Maybe you just need to give it some time and try not to focus too much on appearance.

I am a Vet. There is some truth to what you say however, since you will be essentially agreeing to (if needed) place your life and/or future health (mental and physical) on the line for an essentially pointless war (see: all American actions since the Korean War) in order to make people like Dick Cheney filthy rich ...... you might want to reconsider the obvious merits of a MeetUp as a distinct alternative.

The Army can not only teach you many trades but you can also use the G.I. Bill to pay for your college.

For sure you'll be out of your parent's basement, on your own, and you will love it.

Try posing an inquiry in our Military forum asking those folks for advice on ROTC, and service in general.

I think this might be a little drastic Mike lol. I was in the Navy and can honestly think of maybe 1-2 people that I would hang out with today (20 years later)... lot's of shady characters. It did workout in the long run, but honestly it wasn't for me.

Try volunteering. Habitat for Humanity or maybe doing some Conservation work environmentally. You get people of all ages.

Are you a cyclist? Numerous cycling groups in town...just try your local bike shop and they should be able to point you to some opportunities to hang out and meet people.

Do you play any instruments? Get on down to confluence park, or maybe an open mic, or a coffee house. Keep an open mind and you can meet all sorts of people.

Maybe even just go on a hike and interact a little with the people you meet. Find some of the prairie hikes (Rocky Mountain Arsenal, for example) which would be closer to you. Or head down to 16th Street (I know that can get inconvenient to do frequently from Thornton.) Yeah, you will meet some of the people you DON'T want to meet there, but you may meet some of the people you DO want to meet. You could also try just heading down the main artery of the Auraria Campus during a weekday if you have time. Don't be afraid to engage people.

As gaming goes, mention in your Steam / XBox / PS profile that you're in Colorado, and try to find others in Colorado to play with / against. That interaction could at least give you a benign introduction to some people you could hang with outside of games. Mention it casually (though obviously cautiously) in chat rooms.

It probably won't be instant gratification, but any one of those things would certainly increase your odds of getting to know the kind of people compatible with your worldview and lifestyle.

Good luck!
