When the World Series was in town, many folks downtown rented out their own condos for a high price for the weekends and they stayed with friends or relatives. This helped them pay for a months worth of a mortgage or at least a car payment. I know of folks planning the same for the DNC next summer. I would not put it past a landlord or owner of rental property to go for a one week or one month lease just for this event. It is a historical event and one of the largest conventions to come to town. When the Pope came here in 1993 for World Youth Day, Catholics were asked to open their homes to the youth from around the world as they could not afford the hotels and motels. You may find the same with the DNC as delegates from around the country in the Democratic party may have the same funding issues. Rooms are being snatched up quickly and as cacuses prepare to send their representatives to Denver, questions will begin coming up as to how to house all of them for the convention. The DNC local committees have put blocks on specific hotels downtown but Aurora and the Tech center will also be booked well. I plan to work the DNC as a volunteer and have been asked if I can host anyone in my own condo as well as drive them around to keep the car rental cost out of their expenses. Lakewood is close with many bus routes into downtown and many sections of Lakewood are still blue collar, so if you plan to rent there, look now and talk with landlords about their plans for the DNC in August. Best to prepare early and prevent unwanted surprises. Best of luck to you!

p.s. Lakewood is the closest suburb to downtown, about 3 miles from Sheridan Blvd. and Colfax to the Pepsi Center and the Colorado Convention Center. There are still a few road motels left on Colfax and since it is an easy bus ride in, those will be affected as well. Lakewood and the county it sits in, Jefferson, is not a small area, so you may want to ask some of the forumers here some specifics about what you are looking to rent and areas in Lakewood. Again, prepare early to keep problems at a distance.

there are quite a few cities in close proximity to Denver, up and along US-36 (boulder turnpike) there are quite a few large hotels. And with bus routes into Denver along the turnpike it will get booked quickly.
