Sometimes there are bad cops, but most of the time they are just doing their job. It would be a frightful world if they weren't around. They do far more good than bad.

It's mostly Denver.

I tell my son to be very careful when he goes downtown. While the city is safe, sometimes bad things happen. Sometimes those bad things are done by cops, so he needs to be super respectful, let cops violate his rights if they are so inclined, and he can file a report later. Cops don't like assertive people, especially if those people are correct.

When I think of bad Cops, I think of how some had their hand in black lynching.

When I think of good Police Officers, I think of most of them.
They got one hel* of a tough job!

Body cameras should be mandatory.

Of course they do far more good than bad but that doesn't mean they can go above the law.
There are hero cops who get medals and community praises but this thread is not about that.

Yes, and that's what they get paid for, that's what they signed up for.
We are talking about cops that are under investigation because they DID wrong.

I think that's either already in effect or planning soon in Denver.

In 2014 alone, Denver has paid $11 million in excessive force/wrongful death settlements. That amounts to over $12,000 per sheriff's department employee.

Personally, I think that the money paid out in settlements should come from the money for pay raises for officers. Having to pay out $11 million would probably mean no raises for 3 years. If officers knew their actions could hurt their future paychecks, they might use better judgment, and other officer might be more willing to rein in the behavior of the rogue officers causing problems.

Based on news reports it does appear we have had and still have a problem with police brutality in Denver. This has been going on a long time and is not new. I thought tackling this was one of the main reasons the new police chief was hired. I think we see so many payouts now because it is being acknowledged, investigated and hopefully changes will occur. Previously it was often just covered up.

Officers appear to have to put up with alot from the public so they have my sympathy. Once a dangerous person is subdued I tend to side with the person and this appears to be where Denver is always crossing the line. However for instances where officers are being attacked or being threatened in any fashion I side with the officer and say go for it. Both Ferguson and the recent Cleveland incident fall in this category.

My parents gave us good advice when we were kids. Avoid the police. If you see something happening go the other direction. Do not go over to see what is happening because you never know when stray bullets will fly. If you encounter the police do what they say.

I can't imagine all the crap they have to put up with based on what I see of many people's behavior. I'm glad they are there taking down the thieves and violent criminals. However I do not support profiling or harrassing of people when there is nothing to indicate they have done anything wrong.

Yes, my thoughts exactly.
The latest news where deputies thrashed the guy to take drugs out from mouth is okay in my eyes even if they are using excessive force.
I'm okay with cops using excessive force against known criminals (that is still not within cops' rights-just my opinion) but not during initial encounter as the person they are after may be completely innocent.

The captain who shoved fan in Coors field is now demoted.
That was just too much aggression from that captain.

Behavior like these must be controlled otherwise it'll be you or me during a regular traffic stop facing the same thing.

Good thing is DPD is investigating and punishing those involved cops.
Bad thing is the payout to victims will come from my paycheck.
