In truth, any sort of backyard is more space tan we have now so I am willing to rent a place like that, with a big fenced yard, but not sure if we would buy there, but for now anywhere with a yard sounds like heaven.

You're probably looking at the 'burbs then, but I think you'll be able to find something. There are many older areas that started out looking like Stepford neighborhoods, but time has softened the edges. That being said, Highlands Ranch is probably not going to appeal. The good thing about renting is that if commute becomes an issue, you can move fairly easily.
