Education receives less than half the marijuana tax revenue. It's all allocated from the 15% excise tax on transactions between wholesalers and retailers (recreational pot ONLY - no medical). The first $40 million of that goes into the BEST fund for school construction. The rest goes into the state's Public School Fund.

Last year the state collected $196 million in total tax revenue from medical and recreational marijuana. Only $71.9 million of that was given to education.

Compare that to the roughly $7 BILLION public school funding budget and you'll quickly realize it's a drop in the bucket.

Marijuana tax revenue info available here.

Side note - The reason why Aurora refuses to allow medical marijuana shops is because they can only collect the 2.9% sales tax on it. After subtracting the overhead for permitting and compliance the city claims they'll lose money on it. There are a couple items on November's ballot in Aurora that would allow the city to add additional taxes on medical marijuana to make it feasible.

Since when did the feelings of Californians matter?

Give it a rest, man.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 42% of the people here were born here. That means 58%, the majority, are not form here. The largest percentage of transplants, 11%, are from other countries. CA only makes up 6% of the population followed by TX at 3%. 6% of the state is only 328k. If you think that amount of people can significantly influence the other 5.2 million people here, you give them too much credit.

FWIW, if you go back way back to the 1950s, even then only 46% of the population was native born. CO has always been a destination state. Evaluated nationally, we are actually pretty middle of the road as far as transplants go. We could be more like FL or AZ if you really want a transplant population influencing things.

To keep on topic about weed, since CA has legalized recreational pot, we should see a decrease in transplants from CA, right? Of course, such a view neglects to take into account the 20% of the transplants coming here from all over the rest of the country. This number has a much greater impact on the state than CA does.

We lived in Denver during the good time,1971-1988 when the migration from Ca. and gangs began, since has been downhill from what I hear.
We enjoyed the antique stores on Broadway and Federal and never gave a thought to safety as we drove or walked in any area, even Colfax. We enjoyed the Denver Zoo and were members.
Did enjoy Mile Hi Stadium and Stapleton for plane flight to Vegas.
Our son pen-palled with Allen Phipps unknown to us and Allen graciously had us as guests in his suite.
This is a memory for ever,we did lose our son to brain cancer, buried in Fort Logan and was a policeman in District 3 during this time.

Sorry about your loss. I was here during that time and would hardly say that denver has gone downhill since. It is a much better city by most metrics today.

I'm trying to understand why so many Colorado residents have an obsession with California. Also, everyone laughs at your "native" bumper sticker, lil bud.
